Director for the Center for Teaching and Learning and Honors Program

JOB DESCRIPTION: Newberry College invites applications for a full-time Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and Honors Program. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a seasoned educator and academic leader to shape the College's culture of teaching and learning while providing vision and leadership for a distinctive, high-impact Honors Program.

The successful candidate will be an experienced educator with demonstrated expertise in pedagogy, faculty development, student engagement, and innovative approaches to undergraduate teaching and learning. The Director will develop and advance a clear vision for the Honors Program that attracts high-achieving students, supports their academic and co-curricular development, and strengthens Newberry College's recruitment and retention efforts.

This is a highly collaborative position that works across academic affairs, enrollment management, student life, and other areas of the College. The Director will serve as both an advocate for excellent teaching and learning and a visible representative of Newberry College to prospective students, families, and the broader community.

This is a full-time, 12-month position. The position requires regular interaction with students, faculty, prospective students, and families. Occasional evening and weekend work is required, particularly in support of recruitment events, the Presidential Scholar Competition, College Preview Days, and other College activities.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

College Recruitment and Enrollment Engagement

• Serve as an active participant in Newberry College's student recruitment efforts.
• Recruit prospective students to Newberry College and specifically to the Honors Program.
• Participate in the Presidential Scholar Competition, including evaluating written work from applicants and coordinating interviews.
• Participate in College Preview Days, open houses, admitted-student events, and other recruitment and enrollment initiatives.
• Represent Newberry College to prospective students, families, school counselors, and other external audiences.
• Develop compelling messaging and programming that communicate the academic opportunities and distinctive advantages of Newberry College and its Honors Program.

Center for Teaching and Learning

• Provide strategic leadership and vision for the Center for Teaching and Learning.
• Foster a campus culture that values continuous improvement, reflective teaching, collaboration, and student success.
• Collaborate with academic leadership and faculty to identify teaching and learning priorities and develop initiatives to address them.
• Develop and implement programs that promote evidence-based and innovative pedagogical practices across disciplines that strengthen teaching effectiveness, student learning, and faculty development.
• Design and facilitate professional development workshops, seminars, consultations, and other learning opportunities for faculty.
• Support faculty in developing engaging, inclusive, student-centered, and academically rigorous learning experiences.
• Encourage the effective use of educational technology and emerging teaching practices.
• Assess the effectiveness and impact of Center for Teaching and Learning programs and initiatives.

Honors Program Leadership

• Develop and implement a distinctive Honors Program that attracts academically talented and intellectually curious students.
• Develop innovative programming, interdisciplinary experiences, enrichment opportunities, and academic pathways for Honors students.
• Recruit, advise, mentor, and support Honors students throughout their Newberry College experience.
• Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to expand Honors course offerings and opportunities.
• Build relationships with prospective students, families, high schools, community organizations, and other partners to strengthen the Honors recruitment pipeline.
• Develop strategies to increase enrollment, engagement, retention, and completion within the Honors Program.
• Evaluate the Honors Program regularly and recommend improvements that enhance its academic quality and visibility.

Institutional and Campus Engagement

• Collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, and students to advance the College's academic mission.
• Serve on appropriate College committees and participate in institutional initiatives.
• Build strong relationships across campus and contribute to a collaborative academic community.
• Participate in orientation, commencement, academic celebrations, and other significant College events as appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in education, higher education, a relevant academic discipline, or a related field; terminal degree preferred. Significant experience as an educator. Demonstrated expertise in pedagogy, teaching and learning, and faculty development. Experience with high-impact educational practices, active learning, inclusive pedagogy, assessment, and innovative instructional design. Experience designing, implementing, or leading academic programs or educational initiatives. Experience recruiting and mentoring high-achieving undergraduate students. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, administrators, and prospective students. Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and articulate a compelling vision for an Honors Program. Strong organizational, project management, and leadership skills. Willingness and ability to actively participate in student recruitment activities. Commitment to the mission and values of Newberry College.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral or other terminal degree. Experience directing or developing an Honors Program. Experience leading a Center for Teaching and Learning, faculty development initiative, or comparable academic support program. Experience working in a small college or liberal arts environment.
