This position is eligible for telework, which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

Job Summary:

This position manages the MTA Law Department's No-Fault Unit, which handles all aspects of administration, litigation, and payment of No-Fault claims made against the MTA, New York City Transit, and their affiliates and/or subsidiaries in compliance with applicable New York law and regulations. The No-Fault Unit includes claims examiners, administrative staff, attorney(s), and investigators. In addition, the No-Fault Unit utilizes vendors and outside law firms for additional support, including representation at arbitrations and other purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct, and oversee the activities of subordinates in carrying out their responsibilities. Provide guidance, technical assistance, and training.
  • Ensure no-fault claims are administered properly and in a timely fashion in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and fee schedules.
  • Oversee the No-Fault Investigations program to ensure effective review of claims, medical providers, and invoices for fraud.
  • Monitor in-house and outside counsels case preparation and handling of arbitration proceedings.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the No-Fault Unit.
  • Prepare reports regarding No-Fault unit data as requested by the General Counsel and other Law Department leadership.
  • Act as liaison to the New York State Department of Financial Services and other government entities and respond to complaints and audits concerning No-Fault claims handling.
  • Select, develop, and motivate personnel within the department. Provide career development for subordinates. Provide prompt and effective coaching and counseling.
  • Review the performance of staff. Responsible for discipline/termination of employees when necessary.
  • Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to advise senior management
  • Data analytics and reporting skills

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in business, finance, accounting, transportation, public policy, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, may be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years of No-Fault experience
  • Minimum 4 years in a managerial or leadership role

The Following is/are preferred:

  • Minimum 4 years of insurance Company experience, particularly leading a team of No-Fault professionals, including claims examiners and investigators
  • Minimum 2 years of public sector experience, particularly in New York City or New York State.

Other Information

May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends)

Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.
