Position Summary

The Adult Education Director drives student upward mobility and economic opportunity by leading, expanding, and optimizing the College's Adult Education program. This role leads program innovation, budget administration, and staff development while collaborating with workforce development to create seamless pathways from foundational learning into academic credit programs and high-demand careers. The Director builds vital community relationships and ensures every aspect of the program delivers transformative, barrier-free learning while maintaining full compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive adult learner progress and community mobility by directing program planning, fiscal budgets, and team operations while fostering strong relationships with school systems, community partners, and ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and Board policies.
  • Accelerate student upward mobility by designing seamless, barrier-free pathways from education to high-demand careers through intentional community and employer partnerships, supporting the College's mission and strategic priorities.
  • Build and sustain high-performing, equity-driven program infrastructure and funding streams that eliminate operational barriers and ensure long-term student completion.
  • Partner collaboratively with Instructional Deans and the Director of Workforce Initiatives to build integrated education and training pathways, ensuring seamless student transitions into college-credit programs and high-demand career pipelines.
  • Build and lead a high-performing Adult Education team by hiring, mentoring, and evaluating dedicated staff, fostering continuous professional development that directly improves instructional quality and student retention.
  • Drive student persistence and completion by maintaining high-quality learning spaces, equipping classrooms with essential educational tools, and ensuring accurate records that safeguard student eligibility and success.
  • Champion adult learning opportunities across the service region, driving awareness and building strong community connections to eliminate access barriers for the most hard-to-reach populations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, required, or directed by the College. The College reserves the right to assign additional tasks and to alter or reassign job duties as necessary to meet business and operational needs.
  • In order to perform these essential functions, the Director of Adult Education must be present at work. Therefore, attendance is an essential function.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, educational administration, or adult education from a regionally accredited institution is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time experience working in adult education or adult literacy is required. Previous college administrative experience is preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory or management experience is required.
  • Previous grant writing experience is preferred.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups; must have strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, the ability to supervise subordinates and work collaboratively with upper management, the ability to work in a busy environment, and the ability to work weekends or non-standard hours when required.
  • Must have the ability to use computer technology to communicate, access and maintain records, and create reports.
  • Must have an understanding and strong commitment to the community college philosophy.

Application Procedures/Additional Information

This position involves performance duties for a state funded project and is contingent on continued state funding. If funds for this position are discontinued or significantly reduced or if state requirements for funding this project no longer include this position, the College shall have the right to discontinue the position. Neither tenure nor non-probationary status may be attained in this position.

Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. For more information visit The Retirement Systems of Alabama. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers Retirement System of Alabama.

Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 14.57% (effective 10/01/25)

Health Insurance

PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
