Director of Adult Inpatient Pharmacy

The University of Chicago Medicine is seeking a Director of Adult Inpatient Pharmacy to join our world-class academic healthcare system located in Chicago's historic Hyde Park neighborhood.

The Director of Pharmacy, Adult Inpatient, is responsible for directing all operational, professional, and clinical activities for pharmacy operations in the University of Chicago Medical Center’s (UCMC) adult inpatient hospitals which will lend to the success of our healthcare system as we continue to grow in the greater Chicago community.

The Director will be a hands-on and participative manager and be able to work across the UCMC health system. Primary responsibilities include implementation of policies and procedures that ensure the adult pharmacy provides optimal pharmaceutical services that are consistent with the scope of care. The Director will develop programs that ensure all pharmacy staff performs duties and responsibilities with the upmost consistency, safety, and excellence in drug distribution and clinical care. The Director will also support UCMC’s research and educational missions and improve programs with learners in conjunction with the Clinical Manager of Graduate and Undergraduate Education. The Director will also provide institutional leadership and representation in matters regarding adult care related to pharmacy.

Director of Pharmacy, Adult Inpatient Job Functions:

• Assist in establishing the strategic plan for department services, including short- and long-term objectives.
• Collect and analyze feedback on adult service/department effectiveness including all issues of medication safety.
• Develop, interpret, review, and enforce hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
• Safeguard compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations (e.g. FDA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, Joint Commission).
• Administer and manage the assigned area: plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and control all pharmacy service programs.
• Set and maintain standards for a safe, efficient, and organized work environment suitable for the training of residents and students in a contemporary and exemplary adult pharmacy services atmosphere.
• Implement Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) programs for both adult clinical and operational services.
• Provide oversight and direction for all adult operational services, including limited performance as a staffing pharmacist (approximately one day per week).
• Develop and justify new pharmacy programs and services to improve patient care.
• Supervise assigned pharmacists, technicians, and other support personnel in the performance of all duties.
• Oversee and coordinate daily operations while allocating staff time to assigned activities.
• Coordinate hiring, orientation, training, performance evaluation process, scheduling, and disciplinary action processes for all direct reports. Ensuring timely and accurate preparation and submission of payroll records for pharmacy staff.
• Lead operational and clinical activities to improve pharmacy impact (improve workflow, advance patient outcomes, reduce waste, etc.).
• Collaborates with the Pharmacy IT Department to develop informatics solutions for pharmacy information management systems, patient and department modifications, and inventory control.

Required Job Qualifications:

• MBA, MA or MHA degree
• Clinical and/or operational management experience (3+ years)
• Adult inpatient or ambulatory hospital experience (5+ years)
• Critical thinking and analytic skills, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Advanced organizational skills and ability to manage multiple, cross-functional projects simultaneously
• Team player with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
• High-proficiency in using Word, Excel, Power Point

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• D. with PGY1 residency and an MBA, MHA, or administrative residency
• Presentation/Publication self-created or co-written
• Experience in working with large residency programs
