Director of Animal Health

The Texas State Aquarium is seeking an experienced and collaborative Director of Animal Health

\t\t\t\t\tto lead our Animal Health team and veterinary medical program.

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\tThis position combines hands-on zoological medicine with departmental leadership, providing

\t\t\t\t\tpreventive, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and emergency care for a diverse collection of aquatic

\t\t\t\t\tand terrestrial species. The Head Veterinarian leads a dedicated Animal Health team that

\t\t\t\t\tincludes an Associate Veterinarian, Senior Veterinary Technician and Hospital Manager, and

\t\t\t\t\tlicensed veterinary technician, while working closely with Animal Care leadership and staff

\t\t\t\t\tacross the organization. The position also provides veterinary oversight and support for wildlife

\t\t\t\t\trescue, rehabilitation, and emergency response.

\t\t\t\t\tThe ideal candidate is a skilled zoological veterinarian who enjoys practicing medicine, leading

\t\t\t\t\tand mentoring a veterinary team, collaborating across disciplines, and continuing to develop a

\t\t\t\t\tcomprehensive veterinary program.

Veterinary Program & Facilities

\t\t\t\t\tThe Aquarium offers a diverse clinical caseload with particular depth in aquatic animal

\t\t\t\t\tmedicine. Diagnostic and treatment capabilities include digital radiography, ultrasound, flexible

\t\t\t\t\tand rigid endoscopy, anesthesia and surgical equipment, and computed tomography (CT).

\t\t\t\t\tThe veterinary team also collaborates with universities, veterinary specialists, diagnostic

\t\t\t\t\tlaboratories, wildlife agencies, and other zoological institutions, providing opportunities to

\t\t\t\t\tparticipate in research, conservation, wildlife rehabilitation, and collaborative clinical work.

Key Responsibilities

\t\t\t\t\t• Lead the Aquarium\s comprehensive veterinary medical program and Animal Health

\t\t\t\t\tteam

\t\t\t\t\t• Provide medical and surgical care across aquatic and terrestrial taxa

\t\t\t\t\t• Direct preventive medicine, diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, pathology, quarantine,

\t\t\t\t\tdisease surveillance, and emergency care

\t\t\t\t\t• Develop and maintain veterinary protocols, preventive health programs, and hospital

\t\t\t\t\tprocedures

\t\t\t\t\t• Provide medical oversight for complex cases, animal transfers, quarantine, nutrition, and

\t\t\t\t\tother aspects of animal health

\t\t\t\t\t• Provide veterinary oversight and clinical support for wildlife rescue, rehabilitation,

\t\t\t\t\trelease, and emergency response

\t\t\t\t\t• Manage departmental personnel, goals, budget, pharmaceuticals, controlled substances,

\t\t\t\t\tequipment, and hospital resources

\t\t\t\t\t• Ensure compliance with applicable AZA standards and federal, state, and local

\t\t\t\t\trequirements

\t\t\t\t\t• Collaborate with Animal Care staff, veterinary specialists, universities, wildlife agencies,

\t\t\t\t\tand other professional partners

\t\t\t\t\t• Support mentorship, research, conservation, and professional development

\t\t\t\t\topportunities

\t\t\t\t\t• Participate in after-hours emergency response and veterinary on-call coverage

Experience Required

\t\t\t\t\t

Required \t\t\t\t\t• DVM, VMD, or equivalent veterinary degree from an AVMA-accredited university \t\t\t\t\t• Licensed or eligible for veterinary licensure in Texas \t\t\t\t\t• Minimum six years of professional veterinary experience with zoological, aqua\U0010019fc, \t\t\t\t\twildlife, exo\U0010019fc, or other non-domes\U0010019fc species \t\t\t\t\t• Experience providing veterinary care across mul\U0010019fple taxa \t\t\t\t\t• Demonstrated veterinary leadership or program management experience \t\t\t\t\t• USDA Category II Accredita\U0010019fon and DEA registra\U0010019fon, or ability to obtain \t\t\t\t\t• Valid driver\s license with an insurable driving record \t\t\t\t\tPreferred \t\t\t\t\t• Eight or more years of zoological veterinary experience \t\t\t\t\t• Experience within an AZA-accredited zoo or aquarium \t\t\t\t\t• Significant aqua\U0010019fc animal medicine experience \t\t\t\t\t• Clinical experience with marine mammals and sea turtles \t\t\t\t\t• Wildlife rehabilita\U0010019fon and emergency response experience
