The Elcho School District is a PK-12 community school located at the start of Wisconsin''s northwoods. We are located 25 minutes north of Antigo and 25 minutes south of Rhinelander on Highway 45. The Elcho area is a great location for enjoying all the northwoods has to offer, surrounded by lakes and public recreational areas tailored to both motorized and silent sports. We also have an on-site childcare center (Youngstar rated) that takes children ages six weeks through school age, and a morning 4K program. Our small class sizes and family-like environment make our District a wonderful and safe place to attend school.

Position Summary

The Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for oversight of and implementation of the building and grounds operations of the Elcho School District. The areas of responsibility include working with a team to create and implement a comprehensive plan for proper maintenance and repair, providing a safe and healthful environment for staff and students, supervising and/or completing maintenance projects and custodial duties of the district, arranging and monitoring contracted services related to building and grounds, long-range planning, providing staff training, and evaluating maintenance and custodial performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises, develops custodial work schedules, and performs annual evaluations of custodial staff.

  • Recruits and employs custodial staff and implements training programs on proper operation and maintenance procedures for school facilities.

  • In conjunction with the Building Principal, interviews job applicants and recommends individuals to be hired for custodial/maintenance positions.

  • Works with the Technology Director to ensure district safety measures (door access, cameras, etc.) are in place, working appropriately, and adequate.

  • Maintains schedules and assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day, including for school events, with particular attention to security and energy conservation

  • Ensures that all custodial and maintenance staff are following applicable safety procedures per state safety codes and recommends safe practices

  • Creates an annual budget to ensure a clean and safe school.

  • Develops an annual operation and maintenance budget based on historical data, projections, and replacement schedules.

  • Develops and maintains a five (5) year long-range maintenance program (Capital Improvements, building and grounds maintenance, equipment purchase, remodeling, and renovation) for non-capital and capital equipment inventories.

  • Assists in the inspection of buildings and grounds regularly to ensure compliance with established standards of workmanship, health, cleanliness, safety, and security.

  • Participates in training programs to keep up-to-date on health and safety Federal/State/Local codes and laws, including, but not limited to: Asbestos, lead paint, confined spaces, lock out-tag out, hazardous waste, lead, copper, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and compressed gas.

  • Works in cooperation with local authorities and emergency management services to ensure the safety of District students and staff

  • Maintains accurate records of all building and maintenance operations, including specifications, RFP''s, quotes/bids, shipments, distributions, schedules, etc.

  • Develops and implements a system for emergency repairs.

  • Be available to respond to emergencies within scheduled and unscheduled work time.

  • Maintain building and grounds, including school kitchen, school forest, snow removal, cleaning of sidewalks, shrub and lawn upkeep, and preparation of athletic fields.

  • Ensures that school vehicles are properly maintained

  • Assume responsibility for the maintenance and proper operation of all operational systems, including heating, ventilation, air handling, plumbing, water, electrical, intercom system, and all outdoor grounds or equipment.

  • Ensure inspections and maintenance of all school facilities, facilities components, grounds, and equipment are completed regularly to ensure that high standards of maintenance, repair, cleanliness, safety, and security are maintained.

  • Assume responsibility for district management of hazardous waste, recycling, asbestos, building inspections, energy management, safety testing, and handicapped accessibility

  • Maintains all necessary records for the building, including MSDS and complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of all waste and recyclables.

  • Other duties as assigned by the District Administrator.
