The Director of Employee Relations will plan and manage Boston University's employee relations programs, services, initiatives, including supporting the University's Employee and Labor Relations Directorate. Will work to support the University's commitment to maintaining a positive, productive, supportive workplace for all employees. The Director of Employee Relations will provide support to the Assistant Vice President for Employee and Labor Relations, as well as provide employee relations guidance to managers and other leaders, as well as to Human Resources. The Director of Employee Relations will provide leadership on the development and application of Human Resources policies, the development and growth of AI in the ER space, as well as providing support on the administration of collective bargaining agreements, University policies and procedures, and compliance with applicable employment and labor laws and regulations.



Required Skills

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's or higher-level degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business, or a related field is required for this position as is ten to twelve years of progressive Human Resources or legal experience, including significant experience in a position that requires knowledge and application of the principles and practices of labor and employee relations.
  • A Juris Doctorate degree is preferred as is Certified Labor Relations Professional (CLRP), PHR (Professional in Human Resources), and/or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) certification.
  • Extensive collaboration and influential skills; proficient written/verbal communication skills; HR acumen in areas of data analytics/compensation/service center operations and ability to identify advanced methods to improve overall operations within each team; SAP knowledge and understanding of higher education administration is highly desirable.
  • Must possess presentation skills to meet with diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employee relations, employee counseling, performance management, dispute resolution, as well as a knowledge of applicable employment and labor laws. 
  • Strong analytical, oral presentation, and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the use of creativity, initiative, and independent judgment to effectively problem-solve and produce desired outcomes. 
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with university Human Resources staff, management, legal staff, and individual employees.
  • Working Conditions or Additional requirements: Functions occur simultaneously; therefore, the employee must be able to appropriately handle each essential function, prioritize them and seek assistance when necessary.
  • These functions need to be performed on a consistent and regular basis, using good judgment.
  • Frequently stand for long periods of time; ability to read on a computer for extended periods of time. 
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
