Black Women for Wellness (BWW) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing policies and leadership that improve the health, well-being, and quality of life of Black women, girls, and gender expansive people.

Our work moves public policy forward, advances leadership that prioritizes Black women's needs, shifts culture through media and storytelling, and empowers community members to engage in the fight for equity and justice. Position Summary

The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and oversight of BWW's financial operations, financial planning, budgeting, reporting, internal controls, grants financial management, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance. The Director serves as a senior financial advisor to executive leadership and is responsible for maintaining systems and practices that safeguard organizational resources and support informed decision-making.

The ideal candidate brings significant nonprofit finance, accounting, budgeting, grants management, and financial leadership experience, exceptional analytical skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to responsible stewardship of mission-driven resources.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Provide strategic financial guidance to executive leadership and translate organizational priorities into financial plans, forecasts, and resource strategies.

  • Analyze BWW's financial position and advise leadership regarding financial opportunities, risks, trends, and significant resource decisions.

  • Establish financial policies and practices that support organizational sustainability and responsible stewardship.

  • Lead development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with executive and departmental leadership.

  • Develop forecasts, scenario analyses, and financial models to support organizational planning and decision-making.

  • Monitor organizational and departmental financial performance and recommend corrective actions when necessary.

  • Oversee accounting operations and ensure timely, accurate financial statements, reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting.

  • Establish standards for financial accuracy, documentation, review, and accountability.

  • Provide executive leadership and the Board with clear analysis of financial performance and significant variances.

  • Design, maintain, and evaluate internal financial controls, policies, and procedures that safeguard organizational assets.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit accounting requirements, funding restrictions, organizational policies, and regulatory obligations.

  • Assess financial risks and independently recommend appropriate controls or corrective actions.

  • Oversee financial management of government contracts, foundation grants, restricted funds, and other funding sources.

  • Partner with Programs and Development to develop proposal budgets, monitor spending, allocate costs appropriately, and satisfy financial reporting requirements.

  • Identify and resolve significant grant or contract financial compliance issues.

  • Lead preparation for annual financial audits and coordinate relationships with auditors, tax professionals, financial institutions, insurance providers, and other financial partners.

  • Coordinate preparation of required financial and tax filings and ensure timely completion.

  • Implement audit recommendations and strengthen systems based on identified risks or opportunities.

  • Supervise, develop, and evaluate assigned finance/accounting staff and external financial consultants or vendors.

  • Establish departmental priorities, performance expectations, workflows, and accountability.

  • Partner with department directors to strengthen financial literacy, budget management, forecasting, and resource stewardship throughout BWW.

  • Support all other related duties as required by the needs of the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and substantial relevant professional experience.

  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible accounting or financial-management experience, including significant financial leadership responsibility.

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, and restricted funding.

  • Significant experience managing organizational budgets and analyzing complex financial information.

  • Experience with grants and contracts, financial management and compliance.

  • Proven ability to establish financial controls and exercise independent judgment on significant financial matters.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and financial presentation skills.

  • Experience supervising finance/accounting staff, consultants, or financial service providers.

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality regarding financial, personnel, donor, and organizational information.

  • Commitment to BWW's mission and responsible stewardship of resources supporting Black women, girls, and communities.

  • Experience preparing for nonprofit audits and Form 990 reporting.

Valued and Preferred Experience

  • CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant advanced degree or professional credential.

  • Experience managing organizations with multiple government contracts, foundation grants, and restricted funding sources.

  • Familiarity with federal, California, Los Angeles County, and/or City of Los Angeles government-funded programs.
