Description

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for the leadership and coordination of the information technology (IT) services of the college and has primary responsibility for short and long-range planning of the colleges technical infrastructure to ensure that it supports current and future programming and communications requirements. The individual in this position provides oversight to the management of the colleges computer software systems, servers, and networks, for the implementation and integration of enterprise systems and associated subsystems, and for IT instructional and operational support activities.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides planning, budgeting, leadership and supervision to the IT department, communicates current and projected needs, requirements, and options in the college budgeting process, and recommends acquisitions and updates.
  • Coordinates long-range planning activities for the technology infrastructure of the college, including administrative/student information systems, computer networks, personal computers, video systems, and voice communication systems.
  • Evaluates and recommends vendor contracts for hardware, software, and technology-related services as needed.
  • Establishes standards for desktop computing, user support services, and training.
  • Directs IT support services including distance education, media services, network operations and services, student computing, and college telephone systems, and ensures a prompt, efficient, effective, and client-friendly technical support operation.
  • Develops information security guidelines and manages implementation, arranges for needed training and staff professional development, and recommends and drafts policy revisions where indicated.
  • Coordinates the activities of institutional research and web services to support the college's information and communication needs.
  • Provides project management for technology deployment or implementations, is responsible for assuring the maximum availability and reliability of the college's technical networks with the resources available.
  • Establishes standards for technology hardware, software, and communications protocols.
  • Maintains, reviews, and upgrades as needed the disaster recovery plan for the college's information recovery services.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments to efficiently implement technical installations and upgrades.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

SUPERVISORY AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS - The Director of IT works under the general supervision of the college president until such time that the VP of Operations is filled. The position manages the work of technical and support staff who perform the full range of academic and administrative computer services. The individual in this position may, from time to time, have access to sensitive and highly confidential information and must maintain and enforce strict confidentiality as necessary. This position is that of a "working supervisor," and the individual in this position may be called upon not only to plan and direct but to participate in the performance of many of the tasks of the department, from evaluating system issues to assisting with the installation of complex equipment.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Broad knowledge of current communication protocols, operating systems, virtual technologies, and programming
  • Technical knowledge and analytical skills to identify complex system issues and coordinate an effective resolution
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and deliver timely, on budget completion of those projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with college faculty, staff, administration, and governing boards
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical matters effectively with people of varying skills and backgrounds, including board members, supervisors, college faculty and staff, students, and the general public
  • Sufficient visual acuity and physical dexterity to meet working conditions

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in computer information systems, management, or related field
  • Five years' related experience, including one year in a supervisory or management role, or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Current technical skills as evidenced by industry-recognized IT certifications.

LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to complex inquiries or complaints from faculty, staff, regulatory agencies, or members of the college. Ability to effectively present information to the Board, public groups, and/or members of the college. Ability to speak Spanish preferred.

AVAILABILITY - Individuals in this position are expected to be generally available during the normal business hours of the college and may frequently be required to vary their schedule to meet department and institutional requirements, and to participate in professional conferences, workshops, presentations, and college events. This position is not a virtual position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Some visual and physical dexterity is required, including the ability to perform visual identification of equipment, parts, and connections, and to assist in the movement of fragile objects up to 30 pounds. Work may occasionally require bending, lifting, a wide range of arm movement, finger and hand dexterity, and may from time to time require climbing and working from ladders or lifting devices. Setup, maintenance, or evaluation of some equipment may require work in places with restricted room for movement.

Conditions are generally those of a typical office environment, requiring frequent oral communication with college administrators, faculty, staff, students, and external vendors, and the ability to enter and retrieve data and written communications in electronic format in a timely manner. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to heat, cold, noise, dust, and fumes.

State Retirement:

  • Coverage is through the Teachers and State Employees Retirement System
