    Position Summary

    The School of Communications is one of the nation's great communications schools consisting of approximately 1100 students and seven undergraduate majors. Our undergraduate students are required to complete one internship for academic credit as part of the curriculum. In addition, the internship satisfies one unit of the Experiential Learning Requirement for Elon University. The Director of Internships for the School of Communications oversees and manages the required professional internship program for the Cinema & Television Arts, Digital Content Management, Journalism, Media Analytics, Strategic Communications and Visual Communication majors.

    Minimum Required Education and Experience

    Master's degree in communications or related field and professional media/communications experience is required. Prior experience working with student interns is preferred.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    The Director of Internships position requires an energetic individual who thrives in a dynamic and collaborative work environment. The successful applicant should possess comprehensive experience in a collegiate environment working with undergraduate students, as well as the ability to effectively interact with the School of Communications Dean/Associate Dean, Registrar's Office, Student Financial Services, the Global Education Center, other faculty/staff, students, parents, and administrators. Additionally, the Director of Internships should have experience within experiential education and career advising, the ability to work across all majors and class years, and an understanding of the commitment to the mission and student population of Elon University.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation skills

    • High level of organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate a diverse workload with attention to detail and the ability to set and meet deadlines

    • Experience in the use of relevant technologies, particularly with respect to assessments and career development (Symplicity and Qualtrics experience is a plus)

    • Strong writing and public speaking skills suitable for a corporate audience

    • Proficiency with MS Office and database management experience

    • A motivated work style, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a broad range of internal and external constituents

    • Ability to develop relationships with students and employers, both one-on-one and in a group setting

    Job Duties

    • The Director is responsible for supporting student efforts to secure and complete professional internships through individual career advising appointments, as well as workshops and presentations. As the instructor of record for the COM 3985 Communications Internship Course, this role monitors, develops, and assesses the curriculum as well as registers the internships in collaboration with the Registrar's Office and tracks the academic progress of each student completing an internship for academic credit. In addition, the Director is responsible for administering the internship course year-round in each semester (fall, winter, spring and summer terms) and grading assignments submitted for the course for approximately 250 students per academic year. The Director interacts with internship supervisors, employees, and the external community as well as relevant Elon staff and faculty to meet those objectives and assure the School of Communications students are properly completing their internship requirement for graduation.
