Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. We are seeking an experienced and creative Director of Marketing and Communications to lead the strategies that tell our story, strengthen our reputation, engage our community and advance access to affordable housing. A big part of this role is putting Habitat for Humanity's global recognition to work locally, connecting what people already know and feel about Habitat to the families, neighborhoods and homes we are building across Greater Richmond.

This is an opportunity to use your expertise in marketing, communications, public relations and advocacy in service of a mission that creates lasting impact throughout the Greater Richmond region.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Marketing and Communications will lead organization-wide marketing, communications, public relations, brand management, crisis communications and advocacy efforts for Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity and our ReStores.
  • Develop and execute an annual marketing and communications strategy aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Strengthen and protect the brands across digital, print, media, and community channels.
  • Leverage Habitat for Humanity International's global brand, campaigns, and creative resources to raise Richmond Habitat's visibility, credibility and results in the Richmond market.
  • Lead integrated campaigns supporting affordable housing programs, fundraising, volunteer engagement, community education, events and ReStore operations.
  • Oversee website and SharePoint intranet content, email marketing, social media, search and digital advertising, newsletters, annual reports, presentations, videos and other communications.
  • Build relationships with media partners and serve as an organizational spokesperson when authorized.
  • Lead crisis communications planning and coordinate timely, accurate responses with the CEO and leadership team.
  • Prepare executive messages, talking points, press releases, speeches, media responses and other high-visibility materials.
  • Monitor affordable housing policy developments and develop nonpartisan advocacy and public-education strategies.
  • Build relationships with elected officials, public agencies, community partners, coalitions and other Habitat affiliates.
  • Manage department resources, vendors, contracts and the approved marketing and communications budget.
  • Supervise and develop the marketing manager and AmeriCorps VISTA team members while coordinating projects across departments.
  • Use campaign, digital, media and audience data to evaluate performance and improve results.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, public affairs, business or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and directly relevant experience.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, public relations, public affairs, advocacy or a related field.
  • Experience developing communications strategy and producing high-quality work across multiple channels.
  • Excellent writing, editing, presentation, media-relations, project-management and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supervising employees or leading the work of staff, vendors, consultants or cross-functional teams.
  • Strong judgment when managing confidential, sensitive, time-critical or reputational matters.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and use performance data to guide decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including SharePoint, and design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva, along with relevant email, web, social media and analytics tools.
  • A genuine commitment to Habitat for Humanity's mission and to working effectively with people from varied backgrounds and experiences.
  • An understanding of how to use a well-known national or international brand to build local awareness, trust and support.

Preferred experience: Nonprofit leadership, affordable housing, community development, retail marketing, fundraising, government affairs, crisis communications, or public policy advocacy.
