Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Nursing, Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Wisconsin in good standing required.
  • Two to four years’ prior managerial experience with demonstrated administrative and leadership ability required. 
  • Minimum of five years of hospital clinical experience required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point. 

Work Hours

We are seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Director of Med/Surg.

Job Summary

Manages the overall operation of the Southwest Health Medical/Surgical Unit on a 24-hour basis in accordance with current federal, State, local, and (The Joint Commission) TJC standards. Fulfills the responsibilities of a Registered Nurse within the department as necessary.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

 

  1. Supervises and reviews nursing staff.
  2. Oversees the department’s budgets.
  3. Reports to high-level staff members.
  4. Ensures staff maintain high standards of care.
  5. Interacts with doctors, patients, and family members.
  6. Immediately investigates injuries of unknown origin, allegations of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation according to policy guidelines.
  7. Notifies Chief Clinical Officer, or other Executive as needed and as per protocol regarding patient care issues.
  8. Adheres to Southwest Health’s value-based behavior standards.
  9. Understands and adheres to Southwest Health compliance and HIPAA standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  10. Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.

Leadership

  1. Manages the delivery of patient care for the departments.
  2. Effectively enforces SH policies and procedures and ensures department compliance with current federal, State, local, and TJC (The Joint Commission) standards. Provides effective and immediate coaching to care team members on performance issues with constructive feedback. Reports low performing staff to Chief Clinical Officer in a timely manner.
  3. Assigns specified work or activities and communicates policies and objectives to supervisors/managers/staff.
  4. Gives work direction, resolves intra- and interdepartmental problems, prepares schedules, and sets deadlines to ensure timely completion of work with appropriate delegation to staff members.
  5. Evaluates employee performance using objective, measureable criteria, and provides on-going effective coaching and counseling to employees to achieve optimum performance (corrective counseling may include disciplinary action up to and including termination).
  6. Assists employees in setting goals and in working towards achieving identified goals.
  7. Ensures employee jobs are properly designed, makes adjustments as needed, conducts interviews for open positions within areas of responsibility and makes hiring decisions.
  8. Participates in and fosters intra- and interdepartmental problem solving by providing feedback and coming to meetings.
  9. Sets clear, well defined outcomes for work, tracks progress, and assists in setting and working toward identified goals of unit including staffing ratios, current change agents, and yearly departmental goals.
  10. Creates a health work atmosphere that promotes both team and individual growth
  11. Assists with training, development, and staff competencies by creating, presenting. Supports attendance for staff at all required meetings, in-services, forums, trainings, and development.  Assists in education with routine mock codes and critical thinking scenarios including adult OB and neonatal scenarios.
  12. Display DRIVE standards at all times.
  13. Communicates effectively by listening to others, follows up and clarifies messages, and sends information via email, text, or in-person to all appropriate parties.

 

Management of Information

  1. Collects and analyzes data relevant to department operations to identify problems or potential problems followed by analysis, alternative identification, risk/benefit analysis, solution identification and implementation. This includes, but is not limited to, the following National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) and patient safety focus areas:
    1. Rapid Response Team
    2. Wound/Skin Care Program
    3. Health Care- Associated Infections
    4. Falls Prevention and Program
    5. Critical Test Value Reporting and Identification
    6. Hand-off communications
    7. Patient identification
    8. Patient Safety Culture
    9. RAV (Read back and Verify) procedures
    10. Electronic Medical Record
    11. Safe Medication Usage and Medication Reconciling
    12. Clinical Alarms
    13. Maintaining Universal Protocol
  2. Maximization of EMR software and system.
  3. Auditing for adherence to assess adherence to SHC policy and procedure and EMR use.
  4. Follow up with individual staff to educate, clarify expectations, and discipline if necessary.
  5. Performs root cause analysis for sentinel events or near misses involving the Med/Surg Department.
  6. Identifies areas or processes for improvement and utilizes the plan, do, check, act (PDCA) process.
  7. Educates employees regarding performance data and outcomes.
  8. Maintains confidentiality of hospital and individual patient information.

 

Fiscal Management

  1. Organizes resources to ensure effective delivery of department services.
  2. Coordinates activities of department with related activities of other departments to ensure efficiency and economy.
  3. Monitors and analyzes costs.
  4. Develops, evaluates and manages labor, non-labor and capital budget for the departments.

 

Customer Service and Employee Satisfaction

  1. Monitors patient satisfaction by addressing patient complaints following SH policy/procedure and reviewing patient survey results.
  2. Models excellent customer service to patients and ensures excellent customer service by staff members.
  3. Ensures adequate training of staff and employee compliance to established policies and practices.
  4. Ensures employee development, educates employees regarding department performance data and solicits input and feedback from employees.
  5. Conducts staff meetings of department personnel and confers with subordinates to discuss operational problems or explain procedural changes or practices.

 

Innovation

  1. Develops and evaluates departmental programs or services for effectiveness and return on investment.
  2. Participates in personal goal development utilizing supervisor feedback and established organizational/departmental objectives.
