Job Title: Director of Nursing (DON) Correctional Healthcare
Location: Don a Ana County, New Mexico
Employment Type: Full-Time
Work Setting: Correctional Healthcare / Detention Center
Reports To: Health Services Administrator / Program Manager
Position Summary
The Director of Nursing will provide leadership and oversight of nursing operations at DACDC. The DON will ensure adequate nursing coverage, appropriate clinical practice, medication administration, documentation, staff supervision, training, and compliance with correctional healthcare standards.
The RFP identifies a 1.0 FTE Director of Nursing in the staffing pattern.
Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise nursing services at DACDC.
  • Ensure required nursing coverage is maintained across shifts.
  • Supervise RNs, LPNs, and other nursing personnel.
  • Coordinate nursing schedules, assignments, and backfill.
  • Monitor medication administration and nursing protocols.
  • Oversee intake screening and nursing assessments.
  • Support sick call, chronic care, infirmary, and emergency services.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation in the EMR.
  • Monitor nursing quality indicators and performance measures.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Coordinate infection control activities.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDC, New Mexico DOH, DACDC, NCCHC, and applicable standards.
  • Participate in staff orientation and annual training.
  • Support suicide prevention, emergency response, PREA-related healthcare requirements, and mental health coordination.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and accreditation activities.
  • Coordinate with the Medical Director, HSA, behavioral health team, and DACDC security personnel.
  • Support continuity of care and discharge/re-entry planning.
Required Qualifications
  • Active, unrestricted New Mexico RN license.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Nursing leadership/management experience.
  • Experience supervising multidisciplinary or correctional healthcare nursing teams preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of medication administration, clinical documentation, infection control, and quality improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively in a secure correctional environment.
  • Ability to obtain DACDC security clearance and complete required background screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior correctional or detention healthcare nursing leadership experience.
  • NCCHC and/or ACA experience.
  • Experience with correctional EMR systems.
  • Experience with behavioral health, substance use treatment, chronic disease management, and emergency care.
  • Experience developing nursing policies, procedures, and training programs.
