    Director of Nursing (DON)

    Position Summary:

    The Director of Nursing is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining nursing service objectives, standards of practice, and care delivery systems while providing administrative authority and leadership to all nursing staff. This role oversees the RAI process, MDS coordination, care planning, and the delivery of resident care, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as the Nurse Practice Act. The Director of Nursing collaborates with all facility departments and external providers to coordinate admissions, discharges, referrals, and interdisciplinary care planning. Key responsibilities include managing staffing and scheduling, promoting efficiency within budget guidelines, and maintaining adequate supplies and equipment in partnership with the Administrator and Maintenance Director. Additionally, the Director fosters a positive, inclusive workplace culture, supports resident rights and confidentiality, strengthens medication safety and quality improvement efforts, and ensures staff receive ongoing education and training aligned with current policies, regulations, and best practices.

    Qualifications:

    • Licensure and Training Requirements: Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in Minnesota with training in rehabilitation, gerontology, nursing administration, management, supervision, or psychiatric/geriatric nursing-either before or within 12 months of appointment as Director of Nursing Services.

    • Communication and Functional Abilities: Must be able to communicate effectively in verbal and written form and perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

    • Background and Compliance: Must pass a criminal background check as required by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

    • Preferred Experience and Required Soft Skills: Preferred experience in healthcare, especially in skilled nursing or assisted living; must also demonstrate adaptability, resilience, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills to build trust and handle diverse demands.
