Director of Property Accounting

We are seeking an experienced REMOTEDirector of Accounting to lead our property accounting function and oversee the financial reporting, controls, and accounting processes supporting our portfolio.

This is a fully remote leadership role for someone who can both manage a team and dig into the details when necessary. The ideal candidate understands that great accounting in property management goes beyond producing financial statements—it requires strong systems, clean processes, accurate property-level data, and close collaboration with operations.

Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Direct the monthly accounting close and financial reporting process across multiple property and ownership entities.
• Review property-level balance sheets, income statements, budget-to-actual reports, general ledgers, trial balances, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness.
• Ensure accounting is performed in accordance with GAAP, company policies, partnership requirements, and applicable lender or regulatory requirements.
• Review account reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, intercompany activity, and other month-end entries.
• Identify unusual financial activity, reporting inconsistencies, and accounting issues and drive them through resolution.
• Maintain appropriate accounting policies, procedures, workpapers, and internal controls.

Team Leadership

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of property accounting professionals.
• Establish clear expectations, workflows, deadlines, and accountability for the accounting team.
• Review work product and provide technical guidance and training.
• Evaluate workloads and processes and recommend staffing or workflow changes as the portfolio grows.
• Build a collaborative, service-oriented relationship between accounting, property operations, compliance, and executive leadership.

Property & Portfolio Accounting

• Oversee accounting for a multi-property portfolio that includes affordable and conventional multifamily housing.
• Support new-property and new-client onboarding, including chart-of-account mapping, opening balances, banking, reporting structures, and accounting workflows.
• Oversee cash management and monitor property-level cash needs.
• Review cash forecasts and help leadership identify liquidity issues and funding requirements.
• Oversee accounts payable processes and payment controls.
• Partner with operations teams to resolve resident, subsidy, utility, vendor, and property-level accounting issues.

Audit, Tax & Compliance

• Coordinate annual financial statement audits and tax-return preparation with external accountants and auditors.
• Prepare or oversee year-end schedules and supporting documentation.
• Support annual 1099 reporting and other required accounting filings.
• Respond to lender, owner, auditor, and client financial-information requests.
• Maintain effective financial controls and identify opportunities to reduce financial and operational risk.

Systems & Process Improvement

• Continuously evaluate accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
• Develop standardized processes, templates, reconciliations, and reporting tools.
• Participate in accounting-system implementations, integrations, and process automation.
• Help ensure property-management and accounting systems are being used consistently across the organization.
• Translate complex accounting issues into clear, practical guidance for non-accounting team members.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• 3+ years of experience leading or directly supervising an accounting team.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial statements, reconciliations, month-end close, and internal controls.
• Experience managing accounting for multiple entities, business units, properties, or clients.
• Demonstrated ability to review financial statements and identify errors, trends, and unusual activity.
• Strong Excel skills.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lead effectively in a remote work environment.
• Comfortable operating in a growing organization where processes continue to evolve.

Strongly Preferred

• Multifamily, real estate, or property-management accounting experience.
• Experience overseeing property accountants or a property-accounting department.
• Experience with affordable housing, LIHTC, HUD, housing subsidies, or other regulated housing programs.
• Experience with Entrata, Yardi, MRI, RealPage, or another property-management/accounting platform.
• Experience with cash management, treasury, audit coordination, and property-level budgeting.

• CPA, CMA, or other relevant professional certification.
• Public accounting or outsourced accounting experience.
• Experience onboarding new properties, portfolios, or third-party management clients.

You may be a great fit if you are a strong technical accountant who also enjoys building systems and developing people. You can move comfortably between reviewing a balance sheet, coaching an accountant, troubleshooting a property issue, working with an auditor, and helping leadership understand what the numbers are telling us.

You don't need every answer immediately, but you should know how to find the answer, establish a process, and make sure the issue stays solved.

This position is fully remote and requires regular availability during Eastern Time business hours.
