Job Description

The Director, Surgical Services oversees the 24/7 operational, clinical, and administrative functions of surgical services departments in areas of responsibility ensuring high-quality patient care, staff management, and regulatory compliance. Supports the Senior Director of Surgical Services in the development of clinical and operational goals and plans. The Director, Surgical Services will lead and participate in multi-disciplinary committees at multiple levels of leadership and align areas of responsibilities to meet performance metrics and strategies of the department and Valley Health System.

Responsibilities and Duties

Operational Management: Oversee all surgical services areas of responsibility, manage daily operations, surgery scheduling, staff allocation, and resource utilization to optimize patient flow and surgical suite efficiency.

• Provides effective fiscal management of responsible departments
• Develops and implements detailed business plans to enhance the operations of departments
• Recommends staffing requirements based on volume, severity of illness and standard for care delivery
• Develops and implements strategies to increase surgical case volumes, including block time optimization, scheduling standardization, and reduction of barriers to care.

Clinical Oversight: Coordinate with surgeons, nurses, and surgical technologists to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality patient care.

• Leads and directs patient care related projects/teams
• Assists staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change
• Promotes staff involvement in decision making at various levels
• Initiates corrective actions as necessary

Policy and Compliance: Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards for surgical services, ensuring adherence to healthcare regulations and accreditation requirements.

• Establish policies and procedures, goals and objectives of the department.

Budget and Resource Management: Manage departmental budgets, forecast expenses, allocate resources, and identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining clinical excellence.

• Oversight and development of operating plans and financial solutions that promote an environment of effective decision-making, revenue enhancement, cost efficiency, and sound business practices.
• Monitors, analyzes, and reports access-related KPIs (e.g., block utilization, wait times, FCOTs, TOTs) to measure impact on surgical case volume growth and operational efficiency. Uses data to drive operational improvements.

Staff Leadership and Development: Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and evaluate surgical staff, fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

• Assesses professional growth of employees
• Identifies needs and develops provisions to meet educational goals utilizing internal and external educational resources
• Hires, counsels, and evaluates the performance of team members
• Develops yearly goals and objectives in collaboration with supervisor and team members

Technology and Innovation: Implement and oversee new surgical technologies and techniques, ensuring staff are trained and equipment is maintained.

Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement: Assess and analyze surgical outcomes, using data to drive improvements in patient care and operational efficiency.

• Actively participates in the hospital PI process
• Leads and drives projects and processes to advance quality, efficiency and standardization of services within Surgical Services.

Interdepartmental Collaboration: Facilitate communication and collaboration across hospital departments to ensure seamless patient care.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.

Advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate) in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 4 years of experience in progressive surgical services leadership required.

Certification & Licensures

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Virginia is required. Registered Nurse must hold either:

• A current multistate (compact) RN license issued by the nurse's state of residency (RNs have 60 days after relocating to a new state to apply for a multistate (compact) RN license in their new state of residency); or
• A current single‑state RN license issued by Virginia and/or West Virginia, as applicable based on the location(s) where the Registered Nurse will be providing services.

BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.

National certification by specialty organization preferred.

Qualifications
