The director of systems infrastructure provides strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of the College's core technology infrastructure, including servers, networks, storage, cloud platforms, and datacenter operations. This role is responsible for ensuring that all infrastructure environments are secure, highly available, scalable, and aligned with the academic and administrative mission of the college. The incumbent leads a team of specialists, sets the technical roadmap, manages vendor relationships, and serves a key partner to academic departments, student services, and administrative units. This position plays a central role in the institution's digital transformation, cybersecurity posture, and long-term technology planning.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent in this class reports directly to the vice president for information technology and supervises staff at multiple campus locations. An incumbent ensures Collegewide systems security, telecommunications availability and manages Collegewide communication for everyone at all campus locations. The incumbent also serves as the College's designated information security officer. Typical contacts include College employees, federal, state and local officials, external vendors and consultants, and contractors.

Principal Accountabilities

An incumbent may perform any combination of the below listed accountabilities:

  1. Create, maintain, and continuously refine a comprehensive multi-year infrastructure roadmap that supports the institution's mission, academic goals, and administrative needs. Align technology initiatives with strategic plans, enrollment growth, digital transformation, and student success outcomes.

  2. Provide leadership and operational oversight for all infrastructure platforms, including physical and virtual servers, network architecture, storage systems, backup solutions, and cloud services. Ensure high availability, performance optimization, scalability, and disaster recovery readiness across hybrid environments.

  3. Lead the identification, evaluation, and selection of infrastructure technologies through structured assessment processes. Oversee procurement in compliance with institutional policies, and manage full lifecycle processes including deployment, maintenance, upgrades, and decommissioning to ensure cost-effectiveness and technological relevance.

  4. Promote a high-performance team environment grounded in accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement. Encourage professional development, certifications, and knowledge sharing. Establish service standards and performance expectations that prioritize responsiveness, reliability, and user satisfaction.

  5. Provide direct supervision of infrastructure staff, including recruitment, onboarding, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions as necessary. Assign responsibilities, set clear expectations, and manage work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and efficient operations across all infrastructure domains.

  6. Develop and implement succession planning strategies and cross-training initiatives to ensure continuity of operations. Identify critical roles and knowledge gaps, document key processes, and ensure team members are trained to support multiple systems and functions.

  7. Develop and manage the infrastructure budget, including forecasting operational and capital expenditures. Provide data-driven recommendations aligned with strategic priorities, cost optimization, and long-term sustainability. Monitor spending and adjust allocations as needed throughout the fiscal year.

  8. Establish and maintain a comprehensive vulnerability management program, including regular scanning, risk prioritization, and remediation. Define and enforce patch management schedules and lead coordinated responses to infrastructure-related incidents to minimize impact and restore services promptly.

  9. Coordinate internal and external audits of infrastructure systems to ensure compliance with regulatory, legal, and institutional requirements. Perform risk assessments, document findings, and implement mitigation strategies to address identified vulnerabilities and strengthen security posture.

  10. Research, assess, and pilot new and emerging technologies that enhance teaching, learning, and administrative efficiency. Collaborate with stakeholders to test solutions, analyze outcomes, and make recommendations for adoption based on value, scalability, and alignment with institutional goals.

  11. Effectively communicate complex technical concepts, risks, and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership. Prepare reports, presentations, and briefings that clearly articulate business impacts, costs, and benefits to support informed decision-making.

  12. Oversee vendor selection, relationship management, and performance monitoring. Negotiate contracts and service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure quality service delivery, cost efficiency, and accountability. Address vendor issues and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.

  13. Act as the designated information security officer, responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the institution's information security program. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, oversee security policies and awareness initiatives, and coordinate incident response and reporting activities

  14. Develop detailed business cases for infrastructure investments, including cost-benefit analysis, risk assessments, and return on investment. Present proposals to senior leadership, providing clear justification and alignment with strategic priorities to support funding and approval decisions.

  15. Performs other related duties as required.

  • Knowledge of supervisory principles, staff management, and organizational practices
  • Knowledge of state procurement policies and purchasing procedures
  • Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of telecommunications technologies
  • Skilled in diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, and network issues
  • Skilled in technical analysis, troubleshooting, and solution implementation
  • Skilled in report writing and developing clear, concise documentation
  • Skilled in evaluating and recommending technology purchases and investments
  • Skilled in communicating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to analyze complex technical problems and implement effective solutions

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a technology related field plus 6 years of relevant experience to include 3 years of supervisory experience; or other equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
