ROLE SUMMARY
The Tax Director / Tax Manager leads the expansion of the firms tax practice while strengthening client relationships and delivering high quality tax services. This role oversees complex engagements, drives advisory initiatives, and plays a key part in department leadership and succession planning. The position offers a clear partner track, opportunities to build and manage a book of business, and meaningful influence on workflow, operations, and team development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and grow client relationships across individual, partnership, and S Corp tax portfolios
Review and finalize complex tax returns with accuracy and compliance
Lead tax engagements, advisory projects, and departmental initiatives
Sell, onboard, and assign new clients within the tax practice
Delegate work to staff and managers to support workflow efficiency
Train, mentor, and supervise tax professionals at multiple levels
Champion tax software, workflow tools, and process improvements
Maintain quality control standards and represent clients before the IRS
Resolve tax issues, notices, and technical matters
Support department leadership and succession planning efforts
KEY REQUIREMENTS
CPA required
10 plus years of public accounting experience preferred; exceptional candidates considered at 8 plus years
Minimum 5 years of managerial experience leading staff and engagements
Proven experience running a department, service line, or book of business
Strong technical expertise in Partnership, S Corp, and Individual taxation
Demonstrated success in client relationship management and advisory work
Business development capabilities with a track record of originating or expanding client relationships
Strong project management, organizational, and workflow leadership skills
Exceptional communication, mentoring, and team building abilities
High attention to detail and an entrepreneurial mindset
PREFERRED SKILLS
Experience with CCH ProSystem fx and Axcess Tax Suite
Background in regional or local CPA firm environments
Strong Excel proficiency and familiarity with modern tax workflow tools
Ability to thrive in a disciplined, growth oriented culture
