Director of Trauma Burn and Children Surgery

SUMMARY:

The Director of Trauma, Burn and Children's Surgery Verification is an integral member of the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. The primary responsibility of the Director is to oversee the processes that are necessary to maintain the Hospital's American College of Surgeons Adult and Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Verification, the American College of Surgeons Children's Surgery Verification, and the American Burn Association verification as a burn center for adults and pediatrics.

As the only ACS verified Level I Trauma Center in the state and the only ABA verified Burn Center, we provide essential trauma and burn care to over 4,000 patients with traumatic injuries every year. The Director of Trauma, Burn and Children's Surgery Verification reports to the Trauma Medical Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Activities:

• Coordinates with physicians, nurses and other hospital staff to evaluate and address specific patient care issues
• Assesses the need for policies, procedures, protocols, supplies and equipment relating to the care of trauma patients in coordination with the Trauma Medical Director, hospital administration and clinicians
• Identifies the need for and coordinates the development and implementation of clinical pathways for trauma patients incorporating members from the multidisciplinary team.
• Maintain clinical expertise by participating yearly in trauma educational events
• Monitor and evaluate that positive substance abuse screenings trigger a substance abuse consult.

Educational Responsibilities:

• Facilitate community trauma education and prevention programs reflective of injury patterns identified through the Trauma Registry in conjunction with the Injury Prevention Coordinator
• Develops, coordinates and implements nursing education related to care and management of trauma patients in conjunction with the Center for Practice Excellence and unit Clinical Managers.
• Coordinate and provide pre-hospital provider educational events
• Coordinate the Annual Trauma Care Conference and serve as a committee member for the Pediatric Trauma Conference.
• Participate in the New England Trauma Program Managers Regional Trauma Registry Conference.

Performance Improvement Activities:

• Assists the Trauma Medical Director in the development, implementation and evaluation of a Performance Improvement plan that is multidisciplinary and focused on patient outcomes.
• Oversees the Pediatric Trauma Coordinator and Performance Improvement Coordinator, who are responsible for the identification, investigation, reporting and follow-up of incidents and quality of care issues throughout the program, while, maintaining confidentiality.
• Coordinates quarterly reports to the institution's Quality Assurance Department.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Coordinate ACS-COT site Trauma Center verification visits in accordance with ACS-COT guidelines
• Participate in the ABA Burn Center verification by maintaining the Burn database and coordinate the PI process to ensure effective loop closure documentation
• Supervises the Trauma Registry staff which includes the trauma and burn registrars, Data Management Coordinator and Performance Improvement Nurses.
• Oversee the Pediatric Trauma Program Manager, Burn Program Manager, and the Children's Surgery Program Manager. Ensure that the programs comply the ACS and ABA requirements to maintain verification.
• Provide direction to the Injury Prevention Coordinator in collaboration with Director of the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children's Hospital
• Represents the Trauma Program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.
• Manages, as appropriate, the operational, personnel and financial aspects of the Trauma Program.
• Supervises adherence to hospital policies, procedures, and standards through Annual Mandatory training of Trauma Registry staff.

Supervision of the Trauma Registry:

• Ensure the productivity of the Trauma Registry through weekly and monthly reports
• Create and maintain policies and procedures governing the Trauma Registry to maintain a timely and valid database.
• Ensure the integrity of data entry by conducting routine chart abstraction validation
• Create and implement action plans on issues identified by the Data Management Coordinator within the database
• Provides reports for use in clinical, research, financial, educational, and legislative activities related to trauma care.
• Ensure continued educational opportunities for the registry staff

Consultant Liaison:

• Serve as an internal resource for staff in other departments to network in order to provide high quality traumas patient care.
• Act as an extended liaison for Emergency Medical Service agencies
• Develop inter-facility systems with other providers through procedure consistency, communication systems and processes which will enhance the quality of care for trauma patients.

Research:

• Involvement in research protocol development, creation and distribution of requested research reports and maintain log of requested reports from registry
• Coordinate with the Trauma Research Nurse to be updated on all current trauma research and its publication/presentation status

Community/National Involvement in Trauma Care Systems:

• Participate in the development of trauma care systems at the community, state, and national level.
• Serve as the Advisory Member to the ACS State Committee on Trauma

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, with a Master's level of preparation preferred

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

• Current RN license

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

• Eight to ten years nursing experience
• Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to deal effectively with patients, families, physicians and various levels of health care providers
• Ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services
• Familiarity with ICD-9 & 10 and AIS coding
• Knowledge of computer software and data entry
• Analytical ability to interpret data and utilization of it for research purposes

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Directly manages clinical and administrative staff.

$118,892.80-$237,764.80
