Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Pharmacy Procurement and Strategy to lead all aspects of pharmaceutical procurement, supply chain optimization, and formulary management within a dynamic healthcare environment. This is a high-impact leadership role that sits at the intersection of clinical operations, financial stewardship, and strategic planning. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in pharmaceutical purchasing, vendor negotiations, and drug utilization management, combined with a proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in a complex, fast-paced setting.
The pharmacy procurement landscape continues to evolve rapidly, driven by drug shortages, pricing pressures, regulatory shifts, and the growing complexity of specialty medications. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping procurement strategy to ensure medication availability, cost efficiency, and patient safety. This position offers significant visibility across the organization and direct engagement with executive leadership, making it an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned pharmacy professional ready to drive meaningful operational and financial impact. Career growth potential is strong, with pathways into broader pharmacy operations leadership or enterprise-wide supply chain strategy roles over time.
Core Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine comprehensive pharmaceutical procurement strategies aligned with organizational goals and patient care priorities
  • Lead all drug purchasing activities, including contract negotiations with wholesalers, group purchasing organizations, and specialty distributors
  • Oversee formulary management processes, collaborating closely with clinical pharmacy teams, physicians, and finance stakeholders
  • Monitor drug spend trends, analyze utilization data, and identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety
  • Manage relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesalers, and GPO partners to maximize contract compliance and financial performance
  • Establish and maintain robust drug shortage management protocols, ensuring continuity of patient care during supply disruptions
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing pharmacy procurement team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Partner with finance, compliance, and supply chain teams to ensure procurement operations meet all regulatory, budgetary, and audit requirements
  • Present strategic recommendations and financial performance updates to senior leadership and relevant committees on a regular basis
  • Drive technology adoption and process automation initiatives to improve procurement workflows and data visibility

Must-Have Requirements
  • Active Pharmacist licensure or Doctor of Pharmacy degree required
  • Minimum of eight years of progressive pharmacy experience, with at least four years in a procurement, supply chain, or strategic leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating pharmaceutical contracts with wholesalers, GPOs, or manufacturers
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyze complex drug spend data and develop actionable cost-management strategies
  • Proven track record of managing drug shortage situations effectively across a large and complex healthcare environment
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to present confidently to executive audiences
  • Experience leading and developing teams, with a collaborative and results-driven leadership style
  • Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, procurement platforms, and data analytics tools
