Job Description:

The Director, Product Strategy – Commercial Lines is responsible for the strategic direction, financial performance, and lifecycle management of specific commercial insurance lines of business. This role leads product strategy across designated commercial lines (e.g., Workers’ Compensation, GL, Auto, Umbrella), ensuring the lines of business are competitive, profitable, compliant, have market relevancy and are aligned with organizational growth objectives.

The Director, Product Strategy partners closely with Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Product Management, Distribution, Marketing, Compliance, and Technology to deliver market‑relevant solutions that meet customer and broker needs while achieving underwriting and profitability targets.

Work Arrangement:

  • Employees who live within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. The initial training period may require additional in‑office days.

Accountabilities:

Product Strategy & Portfolio Management

  • Own the end‑to‑end strategy and roadmap for assigned commercial lines in support of Segment strategies.

  • Own the overall commercial lines of business, including coverage and rating plans, ensuring appropriate competitiveness and differentiation to drive profitable growth.

  • Own the end-to-end process for underwriting lines of business, including minimum standards, guidelines, and use of 3rd-party data.

  • Evaluate market trends, competitive landscape, loss performance, emerging risks, and customer needs to guide product decisions.

  • Identify opportunities for product innovation, expansion, simplification, or retirement.

  • Ensure alignment between product strategy and enterprise growth, profitability, and risk appetite.

Financial Performance & Profitability

  • Accountable for product P&L performance, including premium growth, rate adequacy, and loss ratio results.

  • Partner with Underwriting and Actuarial on pricing strategies, filings, and profitability analyses.

  • Monitor and forecast product performance; recommend corrective actions as needed.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as the primary product leader coordinating across Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Product Management, Distribution, Marketing, Operations, and IT.

  • Partner with segment leadership to align product strategy with segment strategy and deliver a cohesive market approach, resulting in clear product requirements and priorities.

  • Influence and support decision‑making on segment underwriting guidelines  and appetite changes.

Go-to-Market Distribution Enablement

  • Partner with Distribution and Marketing to develop product positioning, value propositions, and launch strategies.

  • Support internal and broker education, training, and product communications.

  • Ensure products are easy to understand, sell, and administer.

Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure products comply with state and federal regulations and internal governance standards.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Foster a culture of accountability, data‑driven decision‑making, and continuous improvement.

  • Influence by leading through collaborative partnerships with Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Distribution, Compliance, and Technology to align stakeholders and resolve competing priorities.

  • Drive disciplined, data‑informed decision‑making by establishing governance and standards and leveraging portfolio performance, market insights, and financial metrics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree highly preferred; MBA or advanced degree preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in Commercial Lines insurance, with progressive responsibility in product management, underwriting, or strategy.

  • Proven experience owning product performance and leading cross‑functional teams.

  • Deep understanding of Commercial Casualty, underwriting principles, and pricing fundamentals. 

  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyze profitability and growth drivers.

  • Experience working with regulatory filings and insurance compliance requirements.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands‑on execution.

  • Comfort operating in a matrixed, fast‑paced environment.

Pay Range:

Anticipated Hiring Range:

  • $126,000 - $170,000 annual base salary depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location 

  • $140,000 - $185,000 annual base salary depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location in CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA
