Departmental Overview

The QB3 Cell & Tissue Analysis Facility (CTAF) is a core research facility located in Stanley Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. As a California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley (QB3-Berkeley) facility, the facility serves the wider UC Berkeley community.

The CTAF provides access to cell culture equipment and instrumentation needed to grow and assess mammalian cells including flow cytometry, automated epifluorescence, confocal, and multiphoton imaging, as well as a histology suite with cryosectioning equipment.

Position Summary

The Staff Research Associate 4 (Director, QB3 Cell & Tissue Analysis Facility) provides user training and assistance, laboratory and equipment management, and expertise on equipment and cell based techniques. This position coordinates all safety responsibilities, administrative tasks including financial duties, promotional information and outreach, and the writing of grants for acquisition of new instrumentation or capabilities to expand or modernize the facility.

Responsibilities

CTAF operations - 40%

• Oversee the daily operation of equipment in the CTAF.
• Respond to new client researchers quickly when they inquire about the facility to ensure that they understand details about the equipment and expectations of the process of their onboarding, training, access, and proper use.
• Train researchers on proper use of equipment and/or BL-2 cell culture SOPs as needed.
• Manage CTAF Biological Use Authorization, lab roster, chemical inventory, instruction manuals and SOPs for instrumentation and software.
• Help with the evaluation of new equipment and technologies for potentially acquisition at the CTAF.
• Keep CTAF faculty and administrative leadership informed of current priorities and issues. Maintain a notebook of daily work, issues, and research results.
• Keep the CTAF rooms clean and organized as clients come and go with their own consummables and storage needs. Ensure that access to storage and instrumentation is equitable among users.
• Oversee the QB3/CTAF cryopreservation system which includes regular refilling of a low pressure dewar, management of access, tracking box locations
• Maintain computers and IT subnet or coordinate with IT support

Lab management and administration - 30%

• Utilize iLab scheduling/permissions/financials software to allow clients access to instruments and to accurately account for their use of instrument time, facilities, or staff services.
• Hold regular meetings with CTAF faculty and administrative leadership.
• Coordinate instrument use schedules to avoid scheduling conflicts.
• Purchase supplies as needed.
• Work with the financial analyst for monthly billing and invoicing, as well as annual (or more frequent) rate reviews.
• Provide web site updates as needed, to reflect changes to equipment, rates, and access.

Development, outreach and supervision - 20%

• Work on funding applications, manuscript contributions, and develop/provide boiler plate core descriptions for publications, letters of support, informational materials, or insertion into PI grant submissions.
• Work with vendors or researchers to provide workshops on emerging technologies that may be of interest to the research community.
• Coordinate with labs working with organoids to develop methods for using the newest instruments at the CTAF.
• Supervise a work-study staff person to assist with cell culture room and other lab room management tasks.

• Work on funding applications, manuscript contributions, and develop/provide boiler plate core descriptions for publications, letters of support, informational materials, or insertion into PI grant submissions.
• Work with vendors or researchers to provide workshops on emerging technologies that may be of interest to the research community.
• Coordinate with labs working with organoids to develop methods for using the newest instruments at the CTAF.
• Supervise a work-study staff person to assist with cell culture room and other lab room management tasks.

Required Qualifications

• Experience in various types of microscopy and analysis
• Experience with flow cytometry equipment
• Understanding of fluorescent biomarkers and their use in microscopy and flow cytometry
• Strong skills handling instrumentation and their computer or touch screen interfaces and communicating their use to others
• Experience with BSL-2 engineering control adherence and proper PPE and waste disposal procedures
• Experience with automated imagers from at least one commercial vendor
• Strong organizational skills to work independently, meeting competing deadlines and managing multiple activities, with appropriate attention to detail
• Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and oral/written communication skills
• Research experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Programming experience with image analysis software, for example ImageJ, Python, R, Harmony, Cell Profiler, MetaXpress, Custom Module Editor, InCarta, Matlab
• Programming experience with automated liquid handling instrumentation (Agilent, Beckman, Hamilton, Tecan, etc.)

Education / Training

• Master's or PhD in biology, chemistry, bioengineering or chemical engineering or equivalent (Preferred)

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $88,911.03 (Step 5) - $108,381.35 (Step 16) at 100% FTE

• This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
• This is a part-time (80%, 32 hours per week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
