Director, Transportation

Bus Operations

A Director of Transportation oversees and manages all aspects of transportation operations within an organization. This includes coordinating the movement of goods or people, ensuring compliance with transportation regulations, developing transportation strategies, managing transportation budgets, and overseeing a team of transportation staff. The Director of Transportation plays a crucial role in optimizing transportation efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring timely delivery or transportation services.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Directs, manages, follows-up, and controls transportation operations in assigned division to ensure that bus service operates safely, efficiently, reliably, and courteously, is responsive to customer concerns, and achieves the goals and objectives for the division.
  • Maintains harmonious union relationship in the Division, holds 2nd step of grievance procedure for transportation agreement employees.
  • Coordinates with appropriate Division Director for Maintenance to ensure the service needs of the division are met and to ensure safe and timely service to NJ TRANSITs customers in assigned division.
  • Analyzes, recommends, institutes and promotes new policies, programs and procedures, and audits new and existing policies, programs and procedures in assigned division.
  • Controls staffing levels, manpower utilization and expenses within assigned division.
  • Coordinates service provision among garages in assigned division and Service Supervision and Terminal Operations.
  • Motivates, guides, develops and trains employees in assigned division.

This Position Supervises:

  • Garage Managers
  • Garage Supervisors
  • Manager Terminal Operations

Education, Experience and Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Transportation, Business Administration or related area and ten (10) years of progressive managerial experience in public transit operations

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Garage Operations.
  • Candidate must also possess a strong knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and be well versed in Labor Relations.
  • Candidate must also have experience and knowledge in Bus Planning and a clear understanding of bus service.
  • Candidate must also possess strong written and verbal skills and be able to communicate effectively to Staff.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid drivers' license

Working Environment

  • This position works primarily in an office environment, however does require time in the field and on site as well.

Physical Demands

  • Candidate must be physically able to drive a Company vehicle.
  • Candidate must also be physically able to walk and climb stairs primarily in a working Garage environment.
