Job Title Dispatch, Campus Safety Department Dispatchers/Officers Job Code S22511 Job category Full Time Staff Terms and Hours 12-month position, non-exempt full-time (40 hours/week) Salary Range Starting Hourly Rate $22.00, commensurate with experience Job Summary

This position is responsible for upholding the safety and protection of the University by operating the Department of Campus Safety's Communication Center. Under the guidance of established policies and procedures, this position is responsible for making decisions to protect the University's property, people, and visitors.

Core Duties

  • Receive, relay, and transmit routine and emergency calls to campus safety patrol officers and other related agencies and units in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a log of radio transmissions, telephone calls, and other campus information and facts and inputs them into a computer database.
  • Monitor fire watch systems and respond to fire calls as required.
  • Maintain records in electronic and hard copy format, as appropriate, to provide a comprehensive body of information for Campus Safety staff and University officials.
  • Prepare a variety of reports and documents dealing with Campus Safety operations.
  • Utilize computer-based access control and camera systems to maintain physical security on campus.
  • Maintain a register for monetary transactions in the Communications Center and provide daily documentation on sale volume and end-of-day accounting.
  • Collect and track fees and receipts for various campus programs and services.
  • Complete and oversee tasks assigned by the Dispatch Supervisor, Patrol Sergeants, Campus Safety Director, or other designee(s) of the supervisor.

Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or designee.

Education & Experience

  • Required: high school degree.
  • Required: experience in a position dealing with the general public; experience in a position that required the handling of inquiries in a courteous and professional manner preferred.
  • Preferred: experience in a position requiring operation of radio communications and alarm monitoring equipment or work in a call center.
  • Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

  • Preferred: None.

  • Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • All University of Portland positions require the ability to quickly learn and use new technologies, software, and applications in depth and at level of proficiency required for duties of the position. In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a job description nor make the position one that involves higher level duties.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork.
  • Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus.
  • Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary.

Working Conditions

  • Hours of employment: will likely require working irregular, flexible, longer, and/or overtime hours (including hours outside regular business hours, early mornings, evenings, nights, overnight hours, weekends, and holidays); may be required to respond to urgent or emergency type situations with little notice.
  • Stress from work-related situations such as those involving challenging, important, urgent, time-sensitive, or multiple matters.
