Position Summary

The Dispatcher dispatches law enforcement, fire, rescue and support services units to emergency scenes. They provide information to emergency personnel and emergency medical pre-arrival information to the caller as required.

If assigned to the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) the position involves simultaneous monitoring of public and private cameras, emergency communications radios, and multiple software programs to support the police department and communications center in their investigations and response to calls for service.

Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: None

Other requirements: Incumbents must be willing to work any day of the week (including weekends) and any hours of the day. Prior to applying, applicants must take & pass the city's standard typing test with results of 30 net WPM or greater in order to be considered for this position.

Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Drivers License Required Endorsements: None

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses: Must become a State certified dispatcher within one year.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge: Working knowledge of communications center equipment and software.

Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position (must type at or above 30 net WPM). Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Must have excellent verbal communications skills.

Abilities: Must be able to act calmly and promptly in stressful situations. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with the public. Must be willing to work irregular hours, holidays and overtime as necessary. Must have the ability to learn essential communications center equipment including the computer aided dispatch system, radio, fax machine, copy machine, phone system and other word processing software. Ability to learn the Countys general geographic area. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Must be able to multi-task.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with Department staff and supervisors to ensure quality customer service. Maintains harmonious, courteous,

and professional relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: Works with other agencies throughout Sandoval County. Answers

questions from the public or public officials. Presents a friendly, courteous image for the City to the general public, visitors, and public officials. Works with

vendors, contractors and other agency officials to resolve service issues in a courteous and efficient manner.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Receive and record incoming calls and radio transmissions.
  • Dispatch emergency units in response to emergency calls for service.
  • Provide concise and accurate information to appropriate emergency units.
  • Maintain accurate records of the location and status of all field units.
  • Assist callers in emergency first aid as prescribed in state-recognized emergency medical dispatch procedures.
  • Access information systems such as National Crime Information Center, New Mexico and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System and local databases.
  • Provide emergency units with database information as requested.
  • Provide general information as requested by the public.
  • Perform general clerical duties as directed.

If assigned to the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC)

  • Simultaneously monitor public safety radio transmissions, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) programs, and multiple public and private cameras.
  • Perform real-time monitoring of special or large-scale events.
  • Prepare analytical reports, statistical information, and documentation in a professional manner
  • Respond to requests for video evidence during or after critical incidents. Organize, compile, review, and prepare video recordings and related materials.
