Nature of Work

This position performs telecommunications work, in a trainee capacity, in the operation of radio transmitting and telephone equipment and other automated systems to dispatch and communicate with mobile public safety units and the public. Upon successful completion of all mandated training the candidate will be promoted "Dispatcher" under a higher pay range.

NOTE:

Starting pay incentive will be applied based on experience, certifications and qualifications.

Shift differential: $0.75 Afternoon Shift

$1.00 Midnight Shift

Accreditation Performance Incentive: $750.00 Every Three months contingent on case evaluation compliance scores.

Second Language Pay: Equal to 2% of biweekly base pay.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Participates in a program of training which includes, but is not limited to, formal and informal: lectures, seminars, demonstrations, applications, evaluations, and examinations in order to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the classification of Dispatcher.

  • Studies, retains, and successfully demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities attained from lectures, seminars, demonstrations, applications, materials, data, and any other sources of information presented.

  • Performs simple cleaning and maintenance of work station and appropriate computer and other equipment.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies.

  • Participates in the program of training in order to become proficient in and to perform the following tasks:

  • Receives requests for radio transmission from Communications Operators relative to the reporting of fires, disturbances of the peace, suspicious persons, other emergencies, and a variety of other incidents.

  • Evaluates the need for fire, police, or other assistance by determining the nature of the incident, the geographical location, the governmental jurisdiction, and priority.

  • Dispatches appropriate personnel and equipment using a computer aided dispatch system or other means; controls the distribution of air time; relays and responds to requests and information from field personnel and transmits to proper officers.

  • Maintains continued communication with personnel for the duration of incidents.

  • Performs equipment tests periodically.

  • Contacts other agencies for assistance as needed.

  • Assists in the coordination of evacuations in the event of hurricanes and other major events.

  • Receives and relays telephone calls from the public and others regarding requests for police and fire assistance of both emergency and non-emergency nature.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Two year degree OR one (1) year of experience relevant to the major duties/essential functions of the position. Part-time experience will be prorated.
  • Possession of Certification in FCIC/NCIC (Florida Crime Information Center) within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Must be able to type 35 correct w.p.m.
  • Must be able to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Must pass an extensive criminal background check.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the State of Florida (within 30 days of employment for non- Florida residents) for the type of vehicle or equipment operated with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred:

  • Three (3) years of experience relevant to the major duties/essential functions of the position. Part-time will be prorated.
  • Direct experience dispatching police/fire.
  • Experience in a police and/or fire rescue emergency dispatch center, police aide work, explorer program and/or college level course work in criminal justice, telecommunications or related field preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in a communications center.
