Job Title: Engineering CAD Drafter / Designer (Utilities)

Job Description

This role provides basic to intermediate engineering drafting and design support for utility projects, with a focus on power distribution and civil-related work. You will perform field surveys, document existing utility conditions, and create and revise design drawings using MicroStation and AutoCAD. This position offers strong growth potential into a Designer role and, over time, into Project Management, while providing direct exposure to a major utility client.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic to intermediate engineering drafting and design for utility projects, supporting power distribution and civil-related work.
  • Survey and document existing utility field conditions using GPS and conventional survey methods, ensuring accurate and complete records.
  • Conduct site visits, including inspections of poles and related distribution assets, to verify and document field conditions.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain engineering drawings and models using MicroStation and AutoCAD in alignment with project standards.
  • Perform redlines and drawing revisions for a Pennsylvania-based utility, incorporating feedback from designers and project managers.
  • Contribute to design modifications that improve project quality and support process improvements across drafting and design activities.
  • Collaborate closely with designers, project managers, and other drafters to coordinate design changes and ensure alignment with project requirements.
  • Use GIS and related tools, as applicable, to support documentation and visualization of power distribution and civil infrastructure.
  • Apply Microsoft Office tools to prepare documentation, reports, and communication related to design and drafting work.
  • Adhere to established drafting standards, quality expectations, and safety practices in both office and field environments.

Essential Skills

  • Experience performing basic to intermediate engineering drafting and design work.
  • Hands-on experience with MicroStation for redlining and design updates.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for drafting and design of utility or civil projects.
  • Ability to conduct field visits and inspections of poles and other distribution assets.
  • Experience surveying and documenting existing utility field conditions using GPS and conventional survey methods.
  • Knowledge of power distribution design, power delivery, or electrical design concepts.
  • Understanding of civil drafting or civil design principles related to utility infrastructure.
  • Ability to contribute to and implement design modifications to improve project quality and processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drafting, field documentation, and redline implementation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline.
  • CAD certification or an associate degree in a related technical field.
  • Background in power distribution or civil drafting (preferred).
  • Experience supporting utility projects, particularly for power distribution networks.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools and their application to utility or civil infrastructure projects.
  • Interest in career growth into Designer and Project Management roles.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with designers, drafters, and project managers.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively in a team-based environment.

Work Environment

This role operates in a mostly remote work environment that combines office-based work with field visits to inspect poles and document existing utility conditions. You will collaborate closely with other drafters, designers, and project managers, providing CAD and design support to active utility projects. The work involves regular use of MicroStation, AutoCAD, GIS tools, GPS equipment, and the Microsoft Office Suite. The position offers direct exposure to a large utility in Pennsylvania and a clear path for professional growth into design and project management responsibilities.
