Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of first aid and driving courses (District will provide, if not already completed)

  • Evidence of physical fitness and freedom from communicable disease

  • Successful completion of criminal background check

  • Training on highway safety rules and regulations

  • Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Illinois Driver license

  • Completion of a performance test in school bus operation (District will provide training, if not already completed)

  • Pass annual physical examination in accordance with state and federal law

  • Successful completion of initial and refresher training for school bus drivers (District will provide training, if not already completed)

  • Meet all applicable requirements for obtaining and maintaining a school bus driver permit in the state of Illinois (District will provide training, if not already completed)

  • Preferred: Certifications in the ability to work on Cummins and/or Allison transmissions

  • Preferred: Prior experience as a mechanic for bus and other vehicle fleets

  • Advanced working knowledge of school bus mechanics and other small engine and vehicle mechanics

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Adhere to the Board of Education policies and procedures.

  • Prompt arrival and full effort throughout the duration of every shift.

  • Report suspected child abuse/neglect cases as required by statute and district policy.

  • Work cooperatively with other school personnel.

  • Meet, as required, with students, parents, administrator and/or consultants in order to better job performance.

  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy or building/department procedures.

  • Diagnose vehicle problems and perform repairs as needed of all school transportation vehicles including grounds keeping equipment.

  • Review technical reports, vehicle maintenance manuals, electrical diagrams and meter readings to evaluate, diagnose and repair.

  • Maintain an adequate inventory of parts.

  • Schedule preventive maintenance servicing as required by district procedure and applicable law.

  • Ensure the transportation facility is opened and closed on schedule.

  • Ensure the transportation facility is operated safely and in compliance with all district procedure and all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Ensure the transportation facility is adequately maintained and cleaned and free of safety hazards.

  • Monitor two-way radio and answer service calls, as required by the district.

  • Install accessories such as radios, lights, camera boxes, etc., as required by the district.

  • Consult with bus drivers regarding maintenance problems/needs and advise/assist as necessary.

  • Report any questionable damage or mechanical problems to the Director of Transportation.

  • Coordinate State school bus inspections.

  • Maintain vehicle maintenance reports as required by district procedure and applicable law.

  • Serve as substitute bus driver as needed and conform to all requirements of a licensed school bus driver as set forth by the district.

  • Answer phones and help triage complaints in Transportation Office, when needed.

  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the law, including but not limited to, the Illinois School Code, State Board of Education rules and regulations, School Board policies and procedures, all laws and rules in the safe and legal operation of a school bus, and contractual obligations, where applicable.

  • Maintain other district vehicles and facilities machinery

  • Perform any additional duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit 25-50% of the day; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel 75-100% of the day; talk and hear 50-75% of the day; reach with hands and arms (often above the shoulder) 75-100% of the day; stand and walk 50-75% of the day; and bend, squat, kneel, twist and turn 25-50% of the day. The employee must regularly lift and/or move on a daily basis up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

In the work environment, the employee is regularly exposed to video display and regularly works in typical interior/office environmental conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Salary: Based on experience. Minimum Salary is $45,000
