    NATURE OF WORK

    The job of District School Nurse is done for the purpose of researching, developing and implementing program specific information and processes related to district student health services; ensuring effective and efficient program functioning; and assessing program effectiveness and compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    Supervises the district student health services program for the purpose of serving as medical consultant to school nurses and their staff; oversees nursing staff responsibilities.

    Provides mandated student health services and testing.

    Provides in-services and staff development in health related areas.

    May instruct classes in health related subject areas.

    Responds to all program specific school requests as needed and/or assigned for the purpose of ensuring program effectiveness, assisting in improving student achievement and complying with all relevant regulations.

    Responds to site emergencies by providing assistance by telephone or in person, according to the severity of the emergency.

    Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students.

    Collaborates with Director of Special Education for the purpose of ensuring the health needs of special education students are met in accordance with federal and state laws.

    Plans school health program, in cooperation with administrative school personnel.

    Trains site nurses as necessary to provide services to special needs students.

    Initiates communications with a variety of parties (e.g. school sites, other district offices, community organizations, regulatory organizations, funding sources, parents, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring program effectiveness, assisting in improving student achievement and complying with all relevant regulations.

    Develops, reviews and recommends adoption or revision of board policies related to student health services for the purpose of ensuring program effectiveness, confidentiality and complying with mandated requirements.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Master's degree or equivalent; four to ten years related experience.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:

    Principles and practices underlying professional nursing; principles and practices underlying the special field of school health; current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health; organization and administration of other cooperating agencies; state and local laws relating to health and social issues; state/federal rules and regulations.

    ABILITY TO:

    Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies, or members of the community; effectively present information to students, classified/certificated employees, management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    School Nurse Services Credential; valid California Nursing License issued by the Board of Registered Nursing; valid Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Ability to utilize appropriate software to complete reports and provide analytical data as requested. Ability to provide assistance and training to other employees in health related areas; ability to assess and assist students with health needs.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

    COMMENTS

    The District School Nurse provides services which are mandated by state regulations to be performed only by a credential school nurse. In addition, the individual assigned to this position must recognize and respect the abilities of the site Registered Nurses to provide assistance to students in their health care needs and must be able to provide assistance and training in record keeping and student health care services as required. This individual must be willing to share his/her expertise in student health care with classes of students as a guest speaker. As a representative of the Escondido Union High School District, the employee assigned to this position must present a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
