    Role and Responsibilities

    • Lead the Mel-NAP District Safety Team

    • Oversee and support the individual Mel-NAP building safety teams

    • Oversee threat assessment training (CSTAG) for select district staff

    • Ensure each building has a trained CSTAG team

    • Ensure each CSTAG team has diverse members (administration, counseling, special education, social work, general education)

    • Conduct threat assessments throughout the district

    • Be notified of threats to the district, students, staff, and community

    • Conduct CSTAG threat assessments at the district level

    • Assist in CSTAG threat assessments at the building level

    • Provide threat assessment results and recommendations to the superintendent

    • Work with law enforcement to conduct joint threat assessments

    • Follow prosecuted individuals through the court system

    • Identify victims of trauma and assist in obtaining trauma treatments

    • Conduct district safety meetings

    • Assist with building level safety meetings

    • Provide the district emergency line and respond to calls

    • Serve as the district's OK2SAY first contact

    • Serve as the district's public information officer

    • Write public statements

    • Assist administration in writing public statements

    • Attend training and maintain certification for public information officers

    • Serve as a liaison to the media

    • Attend superintendent cabinet meetings

    • Attend administration meetings

    • Serve as district liaison to emergency services

    • Oversee various district safety/crisis concerns (other than threats) at all three phases of safety

    • Primary Prevention: creating policies and training for safety events

    • Secondary intervention: address the emergency, follow the safety plan, mitigate the impact, and resolve the emergency as safely, and quickly as reasonable

    • Tertiary Intervention: identify those impacted by the safety event and provide supports, including trauma debriefing

    • Oversee post critical incident debriefing with the safety team, emergency services, staff, and community, as necessary

    • Oversee ALICE training for the district

    • Advise on online training modules for district staff

    • Provide in person ALICE training for select district staff

    • Maintain Certified ALICE Trainer status and updates

    • Serve as liaison to ALICE/Navigate360

    • Serve as a liaison to the Lockout Company and assist in the installation, training, and usage of the SmartBoot System for the district

    • Assist Building Services and Maintenance in assessing and maintaining the physical security, structures of the district and camera systems.

    • Provide a presence for assistance and deterrence at each of the district's buildings

    • Attend safety conferences to obtain critical updates and information

    • Michigan State Police Office of School Safety Academy

    • Great Lakes Homeland Security Conference

    • North American Active Assailant Conference

    • Obtain various trainings relevant to the Safety Coordinator position

    • Trauma diffusion from STARR Commonwealth and School specialist from TLC

    • Maintain and update multiple, various FEMA training such as unified incident command (UIC)

    • CERT

    • CBRNE

    • RESA bus security training

    • Preview and recommend district trainings modules for district staff from Safe Schools and other sources

    • Bus driver training

    • Anti-bullying

    • Suicide prevention/intervention

    • Basic threat assessment

    • Work with the Special Education Director regarding safety incidents and concerns with special education students

    • Assist in providing victim impact statements to the court when necessary

    • Review, update, and maintain the district emergency operations plan (EOP)

    • Attend trainings

    • Receive updates and bulletins

    • Review for best practices

    • Provide recommendations for additions and changes

    • Make submissions to central office for review

    • Review the safety aspects of the district code of conduct, policies and procedures for best practices and legal compliance

    • Assist the district with recommendations regarding liability in safety issues

    • Work with the school district's attorney during safety events

    • Work with the district technology department in various aspects

    • District cameras

    • Work with district SROs when applicable

    • Facilitate community town hall safety meeting for the school district when necessary

    • Answer emails of safety concern from staff, students, parents, and the community

    • Work with district truancy officers to communicate with families of chronically absent students.

    • CPI- Train the trainer

    • Assist in supporting front office staff when needed.

    Qualifications and Education Requirements

    • Bachelors degree in education.
    • Minimum three (3) years teaching experience.
    • Teacher leadership experience preferred.
    • Admin Certificate preferred.
