District School Nurse

Job Summary

The District Nurse provides comprehensive health services and support to students and staff in accordance with district policies, state regulations, and professional nursing standards. This position ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and equitable healthcare services within the school setting and supports student learning by promoting health, wellness, and disease prevention. The District Nurse collaborates with families, staff, and community healthcare providers to meet the physical, emotional, and social health needs of students.

Essential Job Functions

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate health care for students, including administration of medications and treatments as prescribed.

• Respond to student health emergencies and provide first aid or referral as necessary.

• Maintain and update student health records, immunizations, and confidential medical documentation in compliance with district and state regulations.

• Conduct screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, BMI, etc.) and coordinate follow-up care.

• Collaborate with classroom teachers, the special education team, administrators, counselors, and families to address student health concerns and develop health care plans, including Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and 504 health accommodations.

• Provide health education to students, staff, and families on topics such as nutrition, disease prevention, hygiene, and safety.

• Monitor and manage communicable disease outbreaks, following local public health guidance.

• Assist in the development and implementation of district health policies, protocols, and emergency procedures.

• Coordinate with community healthcare providers and agencies for student care as needed.

• Participate in parent conferences, staff meetings, and school events as appropriate.

• Supervise students in the health office and ensure a safe environment.

• Maintain inventory of health supplies and order medications and equipment following district procedures.

• Provide guidance and training to staff on health-related procedures and safety protocols.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in the State of Wisconsin.

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.

• Prior experience in school health, pediatric nursing, or public health nursing preferred.

• Knowledge of state regulations, school health policies, and best practices in pediatric care.

• Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.

• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

• Capacity to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Frequently required to sit, type, use hands, stand, bend, lift, and assist students as needed (may involve lifting up to 50 pounds for student support).

• Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, or hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA and district safety guidelines.

• Regular communication with students, staff, parents, and healthcare providers.
