Staff will work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities including speech/language therapists, occupational and physical therapists, and school psychologists, counselors and social workers to determine eligibility, placement and programming for special education services.

Job Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Current Certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities.
  • Must have at least 3 years' experience as a Special Education teacher.
  • Must have at least 3 years' experience as a Special Education Coordinator.
  • Experience working with outside agencies and alternative education programs preferred.
  • Must have a high degree of organizational skills as well as computer literacy.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding ability to motivate and build relationships with students and parents to promote student achievement and strengthen community partnerships.
  • Commendable history of effective leadership, extra-curricular participation, an acceptable attendance record, and exemplary performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide building-level support to special education coordinators.
  • Participate as a member of the unit count team.
  • Provide support to schools during unit count processes.
  • Provide support in compliance monitoring for special education indicators
  • Participate in and facilitate IEP meetings regarding eligibility, IEP development, appropriate placement, manifestation determinations, and transition planning.
  • Participate in Delaware Department of Education professional development related to special education and ICT.
  • Monitor compliance and coordinate services and placements for students in ICT.
  • Collaborate with IEP teams seeking a higher level of service for students.
  • Support coverage during special education coordinator vacancies.
  • Mentor newly hired special education coordinators.
  • Represent Brandywine School District at IEP meetings for students placed in programs outside of the district.
  • Support district special education audits.
  • Provide professional development and staff training for special education coordinators.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and documentation required in paper and student management systems.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, as well as Brandywine School District Board policies related to assessment, placement, and planning for special education services.
  • Consult with parents and staff regarding the educational, emotional, and behavioral needs of students, including interpretation of assessment data.
  • Participate in the district alternative education team and monitor special education suspensions at alternative education sites.
  • Conduct visitations, to alternative educational placements to monitor student progress, and ensure the provision of appropriate educational services.
  • Conduct visitations, as required by the Delaware Department of Education to in-state educational placements to monitor student progress, assess program effectiveness, ensure the provision of appropriate educational services, and verify compliance with applicable educational requirements
  • Coordinate transition meetings for students in alternative education placements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, use hands to the finger(s), handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, use fingers to type and/or write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and color vision, peripheral and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds. If lifting in excess of this weight is necessary, the assistance of a second person is required. The physical demands of this position will also include the ability of the individual to perform all of the essential functions and related responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.Work Environment: This position normally performs the majority of work in a school building or work office environment.
