Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Titling Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for processing vehicle title applications and related transactions while ensuring compliance with applicable state laws, DMV regulations, and established policies and procedures. The successful candidate will perform complex title research, verify ownership and lien documentation, process financial transactions, maintain accurate records, and provide exceptional service to customers and internal stakeholders. This position also supports operational continuity by rotating across multiple titling functions and contributes to quality assurance efforts and continuous process improvement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to learn and apply Virginia"s vehicle titling laws and requirements, including processing sales tax refunds, lien releases, in lieu of title applications, and other non-routine title transactions.
  • Ability to read and interpret legal documents (e.g., wills, trusts, court orders, powers of attorney) to determine legal vehicle ownership and appropriate title issuance.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to review complex or incomplete applications and identify missing, inconsistent, or inaccurate information.
  • Ability to determine whether a transaction is ready to process, requires additional documentation, or should be escalated for further review.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and resolve complex or non-standard situations (e.g., inherited vehicles, disputed ownership, out-of-state liens) by investigating thoroughly and identifying accurate, defensible solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to review own work for accuracy and completeness, identifying and correcting errors before they escalate into larger issues.
  • Ability to clearly and patiently explain complex information (e.g., title requirements) to customers, dealers, and lienholders, including individuals who may be confused or frustrated both in-person and by phone.
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to draft clear and professional correspondence.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with coworkers across departments and external partners outside DMV to resolve complex or escalated cases.
  • Fast, accurate typing and data entry skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn new software systems quickly and comfortably.
  • Strong organizational skills for keeping records complete, accurate, and easy to find.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment across different functions while maintaining accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain regular, reliable attendance and punctuality in order to meet the demands of a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment.

Additional Considerations

  • Previous experience with DMV title processes or vehicle titling regulations
  • Experience using DMV systems, document management tools, or payment processing software
