Purpose of Position:
To organize, recruit and draw blood donors through a program designed to meet the needs of the Hospital.
Description:
- Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the departments services, internal and external according to the hospitals customer service standards.
- Performs donor screening to ensure donors eligibility per CCHC, CDC, FDA, AABB, and CAP standards.
- Performs all aspects of whole blood collections and therapeutic phlebotomy procedures.
- Performs whole blood collections on offsite blood drives and in donor center.
- Prepares and labels blood components and samples for testing.
- Performs accurate documentation on all blood donor records and data entry including donor deferrals into the computer system and ensures all quality control standards are met.
- Assists with donor recruitment.
- Performs daily inventory and replenishment of all donor care supplies as needed. Sends a list of supplies to be ordered to the Supervisor or designee.
- Obtains appropriate blood specimens from donors and patients.
- Maintains workbenches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
- Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
- Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
Additional DONOR ROOM SPECIALIST I PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Makes recommendations for workflow practices, improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate supervisor.
- Assists Section Supervisors and Pathologist in maintaining programs including but not limited to: quality control, instrument calibration, quality assurance an improvement and development of new methodologies.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
Additional DONOR ROOM SPECIALIST II PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Trains, orients and mentors new hires and/or students on procedures and operations of the department.
Qualifications:
Donor Care Specialist I

- Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and to work under pressure.
- Prior phlebotomy experience required. National Certification or completion of an accredited phlebotomy program preferred.
- Basic Life Support certification (BLS) within 90 days of hire.
- Proficiency in using computers/laptops.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: Donor Care Specialist II
- DPT (ASCP) Certification, QDP (ASCP)

- One-year experience as donor phlebotomist preferred.
- Working knowledge of blood groups and Rh types and donation procedures.
- Basic Life Support certification (BLS) and must maintain certification.
- Current Donor Phlebotomy Technician, DPT (ASCP) certification or Qualification in Donor Phlebotomy QDP(ASCP) required and must be maintained.
- Proficiency in using computers/laptops.
Schedule Details:
40/32 Flex hours per week, Rotating days, 6a-2p, 7a-3p, 8a-4p, 9a-5p, 10a-6p or 11a-7p, Rotating weekends and Occasional holidays.
