The DOT Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining company vehicles and equipment in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety standards. The mechanic will ensure all trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment are safe, reliable, and operating efficiently.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment.
  • Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with all DOT regulations.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues.
  • Repair and replace defective parts, components, and systems.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts.
  • Ensure all repairs are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergency repair needs when necessary.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and OSHA regulations.
  • Communicate equipment issues and repair updates to management.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, or DOT mechanic preferred.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and inspection requirements.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Ability to operate diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Work Environment: Scrap yard, large equipment metal processing area
  • Equipment & Tools: Yard equipment, electrical Safety equipment, hand tools, and PPE specialized for electricians.

Work Environment

This position works in a maintenance shop and outdoor environment around heavy equipment, trucks, machinery, and industrial operations.
