Direct Support Professional Job Responsibilities:
- Provides direct care services such as bathing, teeth brushing, transfers, etc. to the assigned individuals per their plan of care.
- Fosters positive relationships between coworkers and individuals served.
- Ensure safety by maintaining a clean and safe environment and knowing what to do in case of emergencies.
- Encourages self-help and creative activities.
- Reports changes in individuals’ condition or family situation to administrators and supervisors immediately.
- Documents services provided with accuracy and detail on every shift.
- Performs home management functions such as light housekeeping, laundry, bed making, and cleaning.
- Plans meals, shopping for groceries, preparing and serving food/meals, and clean-up.
- Can accompany and transport individuals served to run errands or meaningful activities in the community.
- Learn medical protocols if any and pass medications as scheduled.
- Able to be a role model and teach a skill to help individuals live independently and in some cases manage their homes.
- Assists with organizational needs, as necessary. This means helping the individuals they support maintain a clean home and ensure that their bedrooms and homes are in order.
- Other duties as assigned.
Direct Support Professional Qualifications / Skills:
- Ability to work in a group home, and in-home settings.
- Pass a background study.
- Prior work experience is desired, but a willing-to-learn attitude wins.
- Communication skills (verbally and written) with all levels of personnel, internal and external to the company.
- Ability to handle physical aspects of a job, including bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking for periods of time.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid driver’s license
- First Aid and CPR but can be trained
