Responsibilities
Operate trucks and sometimes maneuver them in tight spaces
Routinely inspect brakes, tires, lights, horns, and cooling equipment before leaving the garage
Load trucks to maximize the use of space and distribute weight accordingly, and to ensure safety on the road
Secure cargo on the truck and place to prevent damage during transit
Conduct security checks and inspections en route
Follow local and state highway safety regulations
Have the weight of the entire unit checked as directed by weighing officials at highway scales
Keep records of loads delivered and picked up, arrival and departure times, and maintain vehicle log books (fuel consumption, mileage)
Fuels cars, trucks, and heavy equipment
Lubricates and greases trucks and heavy equipment such as articulated loaders and backhoes
Inspects tires for wear and proper inflation
Visually inspects vehicles for mechanical defects and reports findings to appropriate personnel
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
Lift arms above shoulder level (i.e., throws bags and loose trash into a truck, enters the cab of a vehicle, uses a steam cleaner
Climb ladders or steps to reach objects
Understand and follow oral and written instruction in the English language
Work cooperatively with other employees and the public
Enter the cab of a vehicle that is 3.5 feet off the ground
Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
Some truck drivers specialize in operating special types of vehicles such as:
Heavy trucks for overweight loads
Gravel trucks
Extended length vehicles
Requirements
This position requires a Class A or B CDL license
