The Early Childhood Education & Development Reporter is responsible for covering the issues, policies and systems that shape the lives of children ages 0–5, their families and caregivers while informing the public about the critical role early childhood plays in long-term community well-being. This role focuses on reporting across radio, digital and social platforms on early childhood education, child care, workforce development, public policy and the economic, political and cultural factors affecting young children and those who care for them. The position plays a key role in elevating public understanding by producing impactful, solutions-focused and accountability journalism that explores what is working, what is not and why it matters. Partners closely with editors, community organizations, educators, caregivers and policymakers to identify meaningful stories, connect audiences with valuable resources and deliver reporting that informs, engages and inspires positive change.

This position is supported by a grant and is currently funded through March 31, 2028. Continuance of the position is dependent on securing funding for subsequent years.

This position is within the bargaining unit represented by the SAG-AFTRA Union. Union membership is not required as a condition of employment.

Salary – $58,000.00 - $65,000.00 DOE

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of four years journalism experience, preferably with a background in education, social services, or policy reporting.
  • Experience in gathering story information, interviewing newsmakers, and writing clear, concise original news content is required.
  • Experience with public media broadcasting is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in field recording and non-linear editing.
  • Knowledge of the education system preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadline.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to write and edit clear, accurate, compelling news stories consistent with AP Style guidelines and ethical journalism standards.
  • Experience in content management systems tools, using software to edit photos and images, and design visual presentations.
  • Self motivated and able to work efficiently with limited direct supervision.
  • Spanish proficiency is highly preferred.

Typical Duties
  • Takes initiative to build a deep network of sources including parents, early educators, pediatricians, and state officials.
  • Serves as a key contributor to the Texas Newsroom, ensuring that stories with statewide implications (like legislative funding for Pre-K or the Governor’s Task Force) reach audiences from El Paso to Houston.
  • Prioritizes stories that reflect the diverse experiences of families and caregivers.
  • Produces high-quality radio features as well as digital-first content and engaging social media explainers, and engage audiences through participation in company and community events.
  • Tracks how local and state funds are actually being spent and whether they are reaching the families with the greatest need, while also identifying and reporting evidence-based solutions and whether they are working.
  • Participates appropriately in company fundraising, sponsorship activities and live events.
  • Collaborates cross-departmentally to fulfill the company’s mission to serve the community.
  • Able to work extended hours during breaking news or urgent coverage, sometimes on short notice; Travel may be required.
