Position Details

EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Location: Charlotte Public Schools, Galewood Early Elementary

Reports To: Building Principal and Director of Special Education

Status: Full Time (1.0 FTE)

Position Summary

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Teacher is a strong teacher leader responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to preschool-aged children with disabilities in accordance with IDEA, MARSE, and district procedures. The teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment to foster student growth in communication, social-emotional development, adaptive behavior, early literacy, mathematics, and motor skills, ensuring all FAPE requirements are met in a professional and timely manner.

Qualifications

Required Certification & Education

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement.
  • Compliance with MARSE R 340.1795: Must possess an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education (ZS), Early Childhood General and Special Education, or a major/minor in Early Childhood Education/Child Growth and Development with full department approval.
  • Able to meet state and federal guidelines to be considered "Highly Qualified."
  • Knowledge of IEP development, assessment, progress monitoring, and state/federal mandates affecting student programming.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting students with autism and developmental disabilities in a preschool setting.
  • Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and standards-based early childhood curriculum.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with families, related service providers, and community agencies.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized instruction and appropriate interventions/accommodations aligned with student IEPs.
  • Develop, facilitate, and monitor instructional opportunities to ensure student growth.
  • Conduct and document assessments, progress monitoring, and Medicaid reporting.
  • Complete all required special education paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with staff and families to provide appropriate programming and services.
  • Supervise and direct assigned paraprofessionals to support classroom goals.
  • Support positive student behavior through evidence-based interventions.
  • Participate in professional learning and district initiatives.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and state requirements.
