POSITION TITLE:

Early Literacy Coach

LOCATION:

Clare-Gladwin RESD (serving Clare & Gladwin County school districts)

REPORTS TO:

CGRESD K-5 Literacy Instructional Consultant

WORK DAYS:

Full-time; School-year position following the district calendar; 180-day contract

SALARY RANGE:

$65,000 - $74,000, depending on experience and education

STARTING DATE:

2026-2027 School Year (August 2026)

JOB OBJECTIVE:

The Early Literacy Coach will provide regional leadership in all areas of K-5 literacy, interventions, and planning. The Early Literacy Coach will work closely with local district teachers and administrators providing support in analyzing assessment data to guide instruction and provide individualized classroom support in research-based K-5 early literacy practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid State of Michigan Elementary Teaching Certificate.
  • Master's Degree in Reading, Reading Specialist Degree, or significant coursework/training in Reading preferred.
  • Knowledge of Common Core State Standards in Literacy and K-3 Essential Literacy Practices.
  • Completion of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training.
  • A minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience in a K-3 setting, preferred.
  • Successful experience in facilitating adult learners, preferred.
  • Successful coaching experience, preferred.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Facilitate instructional support and learning based on current research and the Essential Literacy Practices.

  2. Demonstrate literacy strategies in classrooms as part of instructional coaching and professional learning.

  3. Evaluate literacy needs within various subject areas; collaborating with teachers and administrators using data to identify trends and patterns in order to improve student growth.

  4. Lead educators in the selection, implementation, and review of assessment tools as a means to make decisions regarding students' literacy needs.

  5. Assist classroom teachers with analysis of formal and informal assessment data to determine student response to instruction.

  6. Assist teachers with planning, sequencing, and scaffolding instruction.

  7. Provide professional learning, with follow-up coaching, to support classroom teachers in using research-based literacy strategies.

  8. Work with teachers individually, in collaborative teams, and/or with departments, providing practical support on a full range of literacy strategies.

  9. Observe and provide feedback to teachers on classroom instruction related to the literacy development of students.

  10. Participate in state-provided professional learning for literacy coaches.

  11. Engage in and maintain a collection of professional reading and learning related to literacy that reflects current research.
