Nature of Work

An employee will assist the bus driver with transporting students to and from school in a safe and efficient manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures safety and care of students boarding, riding, and departing the school bus.
  • Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times.
  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on the school bus; monitor and assist students while the bus is in operation.
  • Consult with and assist the bus driver in documentation of student information and recordkeeping.
  • Ensure students are properly secured in seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchairs, as required.
  • Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinate seating of students.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers, teacher assistants, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and behavior, as appropriate.
  • Ensure all incidents are properly reported and documented.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
  • Assist students on and off the bus; assure a responsible adult meets students leaving the bus.
  • Complies with the transportation safety standards set by the State of North Carolina and Mitchell County Schools.
  • Attends and successfully completes all training activities, as required, to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops and transports authorized students only.
  • Complies with local and state traffic regulations and observes all mandatory safety regulations.
  • Reports all incidents and accidents.
  • Keeps the interior of the bus clean.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
