Exceptional Children EC Teacher Job Description

Position Summary The Exceptional Children EC Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting student growth in academic, behavioral, and functional areas.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Support

  • Develop and implement IEPs aligned with student needs and grade-level standards.
  • Provide direct specially designed instruction.
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning needs.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes.
  • Support students social-emotional and behavioral development.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure all IEPs are compliant with IDEA and state regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including IEPs, progress reports, and data collection.
  • Monitor and report student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, reevaluations, and eligibility determinations.
  • Ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented with fidelity.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, coaches, and specialists to support access to the curriculum.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Work with related service providers (e.g., speech, OT, PT) to coordinate services.
  • Serve as a case manager for assigned students.

Behavior Support

  • Collect and analyze behavioral data to inform instruction and interventions.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) when appropriate.
  • Support Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) as needed.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional development and ongoing training.
  • Adhere to school and district policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Support school-wide initiatives and contribute to a positive school culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field (Masters preferred).
  • Valid state teaching license in Special Education or must be eligible to obtain licensure in the state of North Carolina.
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
