The Senior Superintendent is responsible for the overall field management, coordination, and execution of assigned commercial construction projects from mobilization through closeout. This position serves as the primary on-site leader, ensuring that work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract documents and quality standards. The Senior Superintendent partners closely with the Project Manager and project ownership team to deliver exceptional results for clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Execution & Field Management
- Direct and oversee all field construction activities across multiple trades and work areas
- Maintain the master project schedule and develop, update, and communicate three-week look-ahead schedules
- Coordinate sequencing of work between subcontractors, suppliers, and self-perform crews
- Identify scheduling conflicts or delays early and develop recovery plans in collaboration with the Project Manager
- Conduct daily site walks to monitor progress, quality, and site conditions
Safety & Compliance
- Champion a safety-first culture on the jobsite; enforce all OSHA and company safety standards
- Lead jobsite safety meetings, toolbox talks, and incident investigations
- Ensure all subcontractors and workers maintain current safety documentation, credentials, and compliance
- Conduct site-specific safety orientations for all new workers and visitors
Quality Control
- Review and interpret contract documents, shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals to ensure proper installation
- Maintain a written Quality Control Plan; document inspections and punchlist items through closeout
- Coordinate third-party inspections, testing, and special inspections as required
- Manage the punch list process and drive timely completion for owner acceptance and certificate of occupancy
Subcontractor & Vendor Management
- Manage subcontractor performance, holding teams accountable to schedule, quality, and safety expectations
- Participate in subcontractor pre-construction meetings to establish field expectations and logistics
- Review and approve subcontractor daily reports, manpower counts, and field documentation
- Collaborate with the PM to address subcontractor disputes, non-performance, or scope gaps
Owner & Client Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact with the owner's representative, architect, and engineers on site
- Maintain a professional, solutions-oriented presence during owner meetings, walkthroughs, and inspections
- Proactively communicate project status, risks, and milestones to the project team and ownership
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain detailed daily reports documenting weather, manpower, equipment, work performed, and issues encountered
- Document and communicate field conditions that may impact cost or schedule (potential change orders)
- Utilize construction management software (Procore or equivalent) for project documentation and communication
- Manage project closeout deliverables including as-builts, O&M manuals, warranties, and final inspections
Mentorship & Team Development
- Mentor and develop Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, and field staff
- Provide performance feedback and contribute to staffing decisions for field personnel
- Serve as a cultural leader on the jobsite, modeling the company's values and professional standards
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience considered
- Minimum 7-10 years of progressive field construction experience, with at least 5 years in a superintendent role on commercial projects
- Demonstrated experience managing projects valued at $5M or greater
- Experience with a variety of commercial project types (office, retail, healthcare, industrial, or municipal) preferred
Certifications & Licenses
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of construction means and methods across multiple trades
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents, drawings, and specifications
- Experience with construction scheduling software (Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or equivalent)
- Proficiency in Procore or similar construction management platforms
- Excellent communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- High integrity, accountability, and commitment to delivering quality work
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the ability to work in varying outdoor and indoor construction environments. Must be able to walk construction sites, climb ladders and scaffolding, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in varying weather conditions. Regular standing, walking, and inspecting of work at heights may be required.
