Through leadership and teamwork, the Bureau advocates and provides support for schools and families to implement school health programs, and health and nutrition services. Through intra/inter and community agency collaboration, the Bureau works to promote healthier schools by providing professional development, technical assistance and resources to local education agencies. Schools are able to develop, implement and evaluate school health programs and activities, designed to improve instruction and increase student learning. Why does the job exist?

This position for the Public Education Department (PED) Safe Schools Specialist for the Safe & Healthy Schools Bureau serves as liaison and technical consultant for the New Mexico school districts and charter schools regarding safety and security in New Mexico schools through the provision of training and technical assistance and by facilitation the collection and review of safe school plans.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities for the Safe Schools Program Coordinator include:
1) working with outside agencies to secure training and technical assistance related to school safety,
2) traveling to support facilitation of trainings and technical assistance across the state and outside the state, including virtual training when possible
3) promulgating and managing contracts,
4) collecting and reviewing safe schools plans and tracking approved plans for the PED's accreditation process
5) representing the agency at meetings and on committees,
6) coordinating the work of the Safe Schools Advisory Council, and
7) performing other administrative functions for the agency including bill analysis, and grant management.

Who are the customers?

New Mexico students, families, public school districts, charter schools, outside agencies, and the NMPED Cabinet Secretary.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has:
1) Three or more years¿ experience working in New Mexico schools,
2) Has five or more years of experience working in emergency management and multi-hazard threat assessments,
3) Has experience in state government,
4) Holds a master's degree, and
5) Has experience writing legislative bill analysis.
The ideal candidate will also be self-directed and works well independently, works well with diverse and varied constituents, is well organized and has a strong history of meeting deadlines and reporting requirements, and understands the school safety needs. The experience and ability to train adults, and to exhibit strong, consistent communication skills and technical assistance

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and four (4) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted in an office setting, both in-person and virtually, with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage, and with some overnight travel required.
