Science. Discovery. Impact. As an E&E Program Educator, you'll bring the Museum experience directly to local schools, inspiring young learners through hands-on exploration and unforgettable science experiences.

E&E Program Educator supports a dynamic partnership program between the Museum of Life and Science and local schools during the school year and delivers science programming during the summer to campers and/or guests. This full-time, non-exempt position includes travel to elementary schools throughout the school year to deliver standards-based science enrichment programming, build lasting relationships with students and teachers, and further our mission of sparking curiosity and respect for nature and science.

Qualifications

Required

  • Passion for informal education, particularly related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), computational thinking, and/or design thinking
  • Willingness to work with and handle vertebrate and invertebrate animals
  • Ability to engage with children and adults in a friendly, outgoing and professional manner
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Creativity, dependability, flexibility and enthusiasm
  • Must be able to be on their feet for up to 6 hours at a time, walk distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, be able to lift 25 pounds (reasonable accommodations can be made)
  • Conversational in Spanish
  • Valid driver's license

Desired

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience managing a classroom or audience of child, young adult, or adult learners.
  • Experience developing and implementing inquiry-based, materials-rich curriculum to children, families and/or adults
  • Experience in formal education
  • Experience working in a museum or other informal educational setting
  • Experience designing curriculum with universal design for learners, supporting ELL and neurodivergent learners.
  • Experience designing and leading training for teachers.
  • Degree in science or engineering discipline, education, design, or related field
  • Experience using technology to augment and enhance curriculum and program delivery
  • General E&E Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Development, prototyping, and delivery of experiences and programs for visitors, including:
  • Paid programs for children, families, adults and groups (summer camps, school programs, family events, etc.)
  • Informal, on-the-floor programs for visitors
  • Off-site programs
  • Special programs as they arise
  • Management of space for delivery (e.g. classroom), storage areas and materials (including animals)
  • Classroom management for child, young adult, and adult audiences during delivery of programs, and/or managing educators in such delivery.
  • Work on cross-departmental teams as needed
  • Support general Museum activities
  • Evening and weekend work required
  • Other duties as needed
  • Facilitate offsite School Engagement programs including:
  • 5th grade partnership classes offsite at local elementary schools
  • Facilitate programming at school Science Nights
  • Update curriculum
  • Gather materials and build activity kits
  • Lead weekly check-ins with part time facilitators for training for 5th grade partnership classes
  • Attend relevant Professional Learning Communities with Durham Public Schools
  • Update and manage 5th grade curricula database and corresponding logistics
  • Train with vertebrate and invertebrate education animals
  • Facilitate other programs as needed
  • Assist camp over the summer
