Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Incident Response, Education, and Compliance, the Education Specialist plays an important role in advancing the University's efforts to prevent and respond to discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct through effective, accessible, and responsive education. The Education Specialist reinforces a culture of integrity, accountability, and care and supports the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX's mission to create an environment where all people are treated with dignity and respect and have an equal opportunity to learn and work at a university free from discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct.

The Education Specialist develops, implements, manages, and evaluates educational programs and resources for the University community. This includes institution-wide required education as well as targeted educational programming designed to address the needs of particular populations, units, or areas of the University. Working in collaboration with the Director, Office staff, and campus partners, the Education Specialist identifies and responds proactively and reactively to emerging educational needs and trends across the University community. The Education Specialist must be able to respond proactively and reactively to the evolving needs of the University community and develop appropriate educational responses consistent with applicable law, University policy and procedures, and Office priorities.

The position requires flexibility in the delivery of educational programming across the University community, including in-person, virtual, online, and other appropriate formats, and may require presentations or educational programming during evenings and weekends.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 4 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in instructional design, education, law, or related field.
  • Knowledge of Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, or other civil rights and regulations.
  • Experience developing and delivering education or training for varied audiences and through multiple delivery methods.
  • Experience developing educational programming related to discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, civil rights, compliance, or related subject matter.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to translate complex laws, policies, procedures, and concepts into accurate, accessible, and engaging educational content.
  • Ability to interact and build effective working relationships with individuals of various identities and backgrounds.
  • Ability to collaborate with subject-matter experts and University partners to identify educational needs, establish learning objectives, and develop appropriate educational responses.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in determining appropriate educational approaches based on audience, subject matter, identified needs, and Office priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with limited direction.
  • Ability to manage multiple educational programs and projects in an environment with changing priorities, emerging needs, and competing demands.
  • Ability to develop effective learning materials and educational resources using appropriate instructional methods and technologies.
  • Ability and willingness to provide educational programming during evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Strong written, oral, presentation, facilitation, interpersonal, organizational, and project-management skills.

University-Wide Education and Training Programs

Manages and support the University's institution-wide education and training programs related to discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct. Deliver educational programming to faculty, staff, students, and other University audiences through in-person, virtual, online, and other appropriate formats.

Develops and maintain processes to monitor participation and completion of required training and provide information regarding participation and completion by appropriate University organizational units.

In collaboration with the Director and appropriate University partners, develop and implement communication strategies supporting awareness of educational requirements, resources, and opportunities.

Educational Program and Resource Development

Design, develop, and implement educational programs, training, resources, and learning solutions that support the mission and responsibilities of the Office. Identify appropriate instructional approaches, delivery methods, technologies, and resources based on the subject matter, intended audience, educational objectives, accessibility considerations, and identified University needs. Develop educational materials that communicate complex concepts in accurate, accessible, engaging, and meaningful ways and are consistent with University standards. Collaborate with Office subject-matter experts and campus partners to ensure educational content accurately reflects applicable laws, University policies and procedures, Office practices, and available resources. Maintain and update educational content as necessary in response to changes in law, regulation, University policy or procedures, Office practices, emerging issues, or identified educational needs.

Assessment and Continuous Improvement

Develop and implement appropriate methods to assess participation, learning, engagement, and effectiveness of educational programs and resources. Analyze available assessment information, participation data, feedback, and other relevant indicators to evaluate educational effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement. Use assessment results and recognized professional practices to recommend and implement improvements to educational content, delivery methods, resources, and programming.

Manage multiple education and training projects independently in a fast-paced environment and ensure projects are completed accurately and within established timelines. Maintain awareness of developments and effective practices in civil rights education, training, instructional methods, and learning technologies and incorporate appropriate approaches into University programming.

Responsive Education, Collaboration, and Emerging Needs

Collaborate with Office staff, subject matter experts, University leaders, and campus partners to identify educational needs and develop appropriate educational responses. Identify and respond to emerging trends and educational needs identified through trends arising from reports to the Office, campus experiences, assessment information, changes in law or University policy, requests from University stakeholders, and other relevant sources. Develop and deliver targeted or responsive educational programming for particular populations, departments, units, or areas of the University when an educational intervention is appropriate. Educational responses may be proactive or reactive and should be tailored to the circumstances, audience, and identified need. Participate in meetings, consultations, and collaborative initiatives where education or training expertise is needed. Assist with emerging or time-sensitive educational needs of the Office and University community.
