Educational Assistant

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated, nurturing, and dynamic Educational Assistant to support our elementary classroom setting. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with classroom teachers to foster a foundational love of learning, help manage a positive and safe classroom environment, and guide young learners through daily instructional activities, small group interventions, and routines.

  • Communication Skills:

  • Ability to communicate positively with students, staff, and the public, and respond promptly to questions in a pleasant, professional manner.

  • Operational & Professional Skills:

  • Ability to handle stressful situations and multiple tasks, organize details, and work under the direct supervision of certified staff as well as independently when assigned.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions from classroom teachers and administrative staff.

  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and flexible daily schedules to ensure proper coverage and student support.

  • Ability to motivate, guide, and work well with children and adult team members.

  • General knowledge of standard learning tools and classroom technology; ability to assist with the cleaning, maintenance, and organization of classroom equipment, tools, and learning materials.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records, behaviors, and personal information in all phases of the position.

  • Ability to process, apply, and respond appropriately to constructive feedback.

  • Willingness to receive additional training (e.g., non-violent crisis intervention, academic intervention strategies) to enhance job performance or meet changing student needs.

  • Role Modeling:

  • Serve as a positive role model for students and coworkers in how to conduct themselves as responsible, respectful, and empathetic individuals.

  • Help instill in young students the belief in and practice of ethical and democratic values, as developmentally applicable.

  • Other: Additional duties and responsibilities (such as recess, lunchroom, or arrival/dismissal supervision) may be assigned as necessary within the scope of the employment position.

Classroom & Student Support

  • Assist in creating a nurturing classroom environment that is safe, welcoming, and tailored to the developmental needs of elementary students.

  • Help maintain an orderly, friendly classroom climate rooted in mutual respect, and positive behavior supports.

  • Develop strong, positive relationships with students that demonstrate a belief in their potential, assisting in identifying and responding to unmet academic or emotional needs.

  • Support the implementation of supportive accountability measures and positive behavior interventions that encourage student growth rather than punishment.

  • Assist students in understanding and practicing high standards of classroom behavior, routines, and good citizenship.

  • Supervise and assist students during transitions, small group activities, independent work time, and non-instructional periods (e.g., lunch, recess).

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect student safety, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Instructional Assistance & Intervention

  • Curriculum & Lesson Support: Reinforce learning concepts introduced by the classroom teacher by working with students individually or in small groups (e.g., guided reading practice, math games, foundational writing support).

  • Instructional Preparation: Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials, learning centers, bulletin boards, and classroom activities as directed.

  • Technique Facilitation: Utilize a variety of supportive techniques (e.g., hands-on manipulatives, visual schedules, prompt hierarchies) consistent with the developmental needs and capabilities of young learners.

  • Student Development: Help cultivate early communication skills, study habits, basic decision-making skills, and social-emotional growth under teacher guidance.

  • Differentiation & Accommodations: Assist in carrying out accommodations, modifications, and individual support plans (IEPs/504s) as directed by special education staff, interventionists, and the lead teacher.

  • Observation & Data Collection: Observe student progress and behavior, collecting informal data or tracking information as requested by the classroom teacher to inform instruction.

  • Mission Alignment: Strive to support the school district's mission statement and goals through daily interactions and faithful implementation of district-provided programming.

  • Collaborative Communication: Maintain open, professional communication with classroom teachers and support staff regarding student needs, successes, and behavioral observations.
