The Wausau School District is seeking an Educational Interpreter to facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and their general education teachers, peers, and other persons within the school system who do not share the students' primary communication mode of Sign Language.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide expressive and voice interpreting for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing in general education classes (this may include American Sign Language,

English-based signs, Sign-supported speech, or oral interpretation).

  • Provide tutoring services as necessary for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, under the direction of the DHH teacher or the classroom teacher.
  • Accompany and interpret for students for field trips, assemblies, programs, job training and other activities as deemed necessary throughout the school day.
  • Use scheduled preparation time (comparable to teacher preparation time) to preview lesson plans, audio, video and written materials, conference with teachers or

fellow interpreters, adapt tests and other materials, prepare for tutoring, record data, research signs, etc.).

  • Participate in each student's IEP team as a member, not as an interpreter. The interpreter may share observations about the student's present level of performance,

goals and services, particularly related to the student's language knowledge and use, and behaviors that support or impede learning.

  • Assist teachers in adapting the physical classroom setting to optimize communication interaction and access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (i.e.

appropriate seating, lighting, video equipment, removal of distractions, etc.).

  • Serve as a liaison to promote good relations between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
  • Serve as a liaison between the DHH teacher and the general education teacher.
  • Provide note taking services, as deemed necessary, when not interpreting.
