The Public Schools Branch (PSB), represents all 56 of Prince Edward Island's English-language public schools, serving more than 20,000 students from kindergarten through grade 12. The PSB is seeking an Educational Language Interpreter to provide educational support services to a student who is deaf by modeling sign language, facilitating communication between the student and hearing persons; also preparing and providing educational support and materials for a student who is deaf and communicates using sign language

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide American Sign Language (ASL) instruction in the classroom and social settings.
  • Work collaboratively with the school team and the HEAR Itinerant teacher to provide daily learning opportunities to develop ASL skills.
  • Work collaboratively with the student's educational team to develop the Deaf student's educational plan.
  • Supervise and monitor student behavior to ensure safety and supports the development of self-help skills and independence.
  • Assist peers in learning sign language.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining records for language and vocabulary development, student academic progress and social development.
  • Support learning opportunities and strategies for connections to the English language.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of an American Sign Language/English Interpreter Program or demonstrated equivalency as recognized by the Employer;
  • Experience working with school aged students, specifically, students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds;
  • Functional literacy in English;
  • Knowledge of child and language development;
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students and colleagues within an educational team.
  • Current training and ability to apply NVCI
  • First language fluency in ASL is an asset.

The following would be considered assets:

  • University or college studies in Deaf education, Human Services, Special Education or Child Development would be an asset.
  • First language fluency in ASL is an asset.
  • Experience working with students at the high-school level

Applicant must have on file or submit a current Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check and have no past or present criminal record which would be detrimental in working in an environment with children, youth, and other adults
