
Job Description:
Reports To: Director of Special Services in collaboration with the Building Principals
Position Summary
The Paraeducator assists certified staff in providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for students receiving special education services. Working collaboratively with teachers and related service providers, the paraeducator supports the implementation of instructional, behavioral, social-emotional, and daily living activities that promote student success and independence.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
Must meet one of the following Connecticut paraeducator requirements:
Completion of at least 60 college credits (two years of higher education);
Associates degree or higher from an accredited institution; or
Passing score on the State Board of Education-approved ParaPro Assessment.
Experience working with children, particularly students with disabilities, is preferred.
Essential Responsibilities
Provide instructional support to individual students and small groups under the direction of certified staff.
Assist with classroom management, behavior support, and student supervision in academic and non-academic settings.
Support students with academic, communication, social-emotional, and functional skill development.
Assist with implementing accommodations, modifications, and instructional activities developed by teachers and related service providers.
Collect observational data and maintain records as directed.
Prepare instructional materials, adaptive equipment, and classroom resources.
Assist students during transitions throughout the school day.
Support students with personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, mobility, hygiene, and lifting, as assigned.
Participate in team meetings and communicate effectively with staff while maintaining confidentiality.
Foster positive relationships that promote student inclusion and independence.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services or building administration.

Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning, behavioral, physical, and emotional needs.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions and work collaboratively as part of an educational team.
Basic computer proficiency and ability to assist with instructional technology.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Physical Requirements
Position may require lifting up to 40 pounds, pushing or pulling equipment, bending, kneeling, and working at floor level. May include assisting students with mobility and personal care, implementing approved physical interventions, and exposure to common school health and safety risks.
